Wine News

I’m very proud to say that we now have the rack full, (22 different) 2021 Rose’s, that took both work and a little drinking…This week we brought in some interesting new Australian wines, from Nova Vita in South Adelaide, Australia. Nova Vita is a family-owned and run vineyard in Woodlands Ridge, South Adelaide, Australia. Their goal is to produce wines where the terroir is fully expressed in the bottle, sip after sip. This is why they painstakingly grow and then pick each grape — to bring you the best of what their vines have to offer. There were three that we brought in this week: their Cabernet, Sparkling and, of course, their unique red blend that’s my feature for the week. These are some unbelievable people producing wines with a minimalist approach that are definitely crowd pleasers. While three came in this week, keep an eye out for a few more making their way into our line up.

My feature this week is Nova Vita’s, Project K “The SPN” Cabernet/Pinot Noir Adelaide Hills, Australia at $35.99. This is one of our new wines this week and is an exciting and interesting addition to the store.

Nova Vita’s philosophy is to make elegant and premium quality wines from the best wine region in Australia applying sustainable practices to both viticulture and winemaking. To achieve this, they spent 2 years investigating and found the prefect region for growing premium quality grapes in the Adelaide Hills. The Adelaide Hills is regarded as one of Australia’s premium cool climate wine regions and is renowned for its Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wines and is gaining a reputation for elegant Shiraz and Cabernet/Merlot blends. The wine we’re focused on is their Red Blend, comprised of 59% Shiraz and 41% Pinot Noir. You bet it’s an unlikely combination but let me tell you it really, really works. The Pinot provides a soft, rich character to this wine and the Cabernet definitely comes through with that structural element you’re looking for. This $35.99 wine exhibits notes of cherry, spice and everything nice. It’s vegan friendly, unfiltered with minimal sulfates, grapes that are handpicked, indigenous yeasts, sustainable and whole bunch maceration. Simply put, it’s a summer red you’ve just got to try.

Dan’s Pick

Maison Lorgeril 2021 O de Rose’ from the Languedoc region of France is my pick for this week. According to the winery, “this delicate blend of Grenache & Syrah is a refreshing and well-balanced rosé. It offers a gorgeous mélange of upfront citrus, bright spring flowers, rhubarb and ripe strawberry aromas that are framed by hints of crisp mouth watering saline notes, finishing snappy and fresh”. I mean who doesn’t want a snappy and fresh rose? I know I do! When presented with this wine, I tasted very briefly and then said “I need a case of this!” At $24.99 it’s on the upper end but worth every penny. We’re all Rose’ fans here and I believe we’re all in agreement with this pick. This bottle is going to come in handy this weekend so make sure to get in here and pick one up.

Food News

We’ve been watching price changes all over the board. Been pretty lucky to keep our Prime Beef selections stable, as for the most part beef and pork seem to be holding steady. Fish has become a market price commodity as increases are being seen in Salmon and decreases in our Tuna and Halibut. Either way they go, we’re doing our best to hold our prices and we certainly don’t have any plans to stop bringing these items in. We want to be that place, (your place) that continuously has the best steaks, burgers and seafood that anyone has to offer.

Food Feature

Snake River Farms American Kobe Silver Strip Loin is my feature for this week. I know I’ve gotten their Black Wagyu in a few times but this was a new opportunity I couldn’t pass up. This beef will be priced at $26.99lb— a true bargain— and while you’re at it, make it a Surf and Turf with a piece or two of our fresher than fresh halibut. Our Halibut comes in wild caught from cold Canadian waters, never frozen always fresh!

Final Thoughts

So I read today that Barnum and Bailey Ringling Brothers Circus will be back on the road in 2023. Training has already begun to bring the Greatest Show on Earth back to towns near and far. However…there will be no more animals with them after years of protests from animal rights activists. So, apparently we’ve got a year to wait for the big show anywhere near us. In the meantime, might I suggest a few cool drinks on your porches or patios to observe the neighbors dog, robins searching out their prey or even determined squirrels as they race across your lawns. Hey, it works for me, give it a shot! We’ll supply the wine or beer….the neighborhood circus is on you.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
