Wine News

I’m now convinced there will be shortages. Poor weather, significantly reduced harvests, bottle shortages and don’t even start on the question of transportation. Europe is at the very best only getting 75% of their expected yield and when you accompany that with container costs for shipping, we’re going to have fewer opportunities to keep our inventory up. Domestic productions additionally struggle with limited resources and shortages of items necessary to produce. When you accompany that with shipping… “Houston we have problems”. Will we still be getting in new products and your old favorites? We certainly hope so! We’ll keep doing our best to keep everything running smoothly.

Dan’s Feature

It’s in… our once a year allocation of Juan Gil Blue! This 2019 Spanish red is always a favorite and short lived on our racks. While the price this vintage jumped a few dollars, that’s no surprise and at $42.99 it’s still a bargain. This 45% Cabernet, 45% Monastrell and 10% Syrah blend is created from old vine stock in limited quantities and as described in tasting notes as being “deep purple in color, showing luscious aromas of ripe black and red fruit combined with exotic spices. Juan Gil red blend is rich and voluptuous on the palate with incredible balance, finesse and power”. This is our favorite Spanish under $50 and a wine that you’ll wish you had purchased more of.

Dan’s Pick

I have a great new wine from Paso Robles for you this weekend. The region “once known for its thermal mineral springs,” Paso is now known for producing world-class wine. Iron Spring and Sand Spring were two of the springs that propelled Paso into a bustling destination known as “California’s oldest watering place” in the late 1800s. Iron + Sand is a nostalgic nod to the early times of Iron and Sand Springs. “Iron and sand are also important elements in the wine’s classic Paso terroir, as the sturdy iron trellising supports the bearing vines and the alluvial, well-drained sandy soils are the perfect match for Cabernet Sauvignon.” We’ve always enjoyed almost any wine produced from this region and this Trinchero family venture is no exception. This $24.99 Cabernet is what you get when you bring a great Napa producer to a new great environment… a perfect combination for a perfect new Cabernet priced just this side of $25. Give one a shot and see for yourself.

Food News

Sure, we carry a lot of great foods down here but I still find myself in the aisles of Kroger and Meijer and it’s beginning to feel normal seeing sparse shelves and getting responses such as “we’re not sure” when asking on when that item might return to the shelves. Shortages are becoming part of life and we all need to adjust to that, but what I will never grow accustomed to is the lack of quality customer service being offered. That’s the area that we here at the Wine Merchant will promise to exceed at. Be it specialty food items, great wines or special sought after beers, we’re going to make your experience here the absolute best that we can, that’s a promise.

Food Feature of the Week

Last February, we packaged a Valentine’s Day meal and to us the star of that meal was the Lobster Ravioli. In searching out different producers Drakes came away easily as the finest. When we had questions concerning the product, Drakes contacted us, answered all of our questions and proved themselves to be a new friend of the store. This week, we brought in some new products from Drakes: Eggplant Parmesan, Lobster Ravioli and Ravioli Florentine all packaged for retail. Sure, you may be able to buy elsewhere but hey do you really want to travel to Whole Foods to get these new fantastic products when we have them right here for you now?!

Final Thought

It’s a new season, a season that is my favorite, we’ll be searching out big bold reds, hearty dark beers and new take home dinner items. This week we’re happy to bring in Drakes Pasta and I’m sure there will be other great fall selections coming soon. There’s little we can actually control these days, but quality food items for you and your families, a great bottle of wine to share at the table and a cold beer to watch the game on Saturday will always be something we have to share with you and that’s something we’re doing our best to control.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
