WINE NEWS…

I think this week’s title says it all, Le 2020 Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive. We will have nine producers to pull from this year, familiar names such as Dubeuf, Drouhin, Rochette and others will be available starting today. Fresh young wines meant to be quaffed, they adorn a holiday table or an empty glass equally well. Come in and pick up a few and maybe dinner as well, it may be a new take on an annual celebration, but hey like the vintage it is… 2020.

Dan’s Wine Feature

Two features this week, both big beautiful Italian wines! The King will be described first, Arnoldo Rivera’s 2013 Castello Barolo. If you like Barolos, this is your wine, Nebbiolo at its finest. Produced in one of the best areas in the Langhe, vinified by the very skilled winemakers of Arnaldo Rivera, we have ourself a classic example of why this wine is considered the King of Italian wines. Allowing this $69.99 bottle to open for an hour or two will be doing it justice, accompanying a great piece of beef or lamb will even be better. Barolos need food, while some may enjoy this by itself, I’ve always wanted it to be served alongside a great piece of beef. Didn’t get many but there are a few down here for you to enjoy. My next bottle to share for this week’s feature is ZENI 2013 Amarone Barriques, while not a King or Queen of Italian wine it’s certainly a Prince. Coming from the same general region this bottle is the most classic example of Appassimento produced wines. Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella plus a few other indigenous varietals are first dried and then pressed creating a deep, dark, delicious wine that you can spend considerable time describing all the notes that appear in you glass. At $54.99 it’s not an everyday wine but a great deal for a great bottle of wine.

Dan’s Pick

It’s back to Jim Clendenen’s wines this week. Au Bon Climat 2018 Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir is definitely my pick for this week. If you’re not going to drink Beaujolais for Thanksgiving, then you should certainly have this on the table. This $24.99 bottle of Pinot from one of my favorite producers describes Jim’s wines, a perfect example of the varietal, produced as stylistically as a bottle can be. While definitely paying homage to France, this wine is still all California and certainly all Jim Clendenen. There’s been little to excite me this year but the return of these wines to this market is for sure a highlight!

Final Thought

While it may not be a real holiday in the U.S. I’ve always looked at Beaujolais Nouveau as a celebration to wine itself, the harvest, the change of season. Is Beaujolais a serious wine, no, is it good, well that depends on who you ask. It’s a wine I discuss once, then, I just drink… Fresh Gamay from the harvests of 2020 from the Beaujolais region of Southern Burgundy, who else does this…no one. Sure, there are wine events but nothing like Beaujolais Nouveau, ours is different this year but it’s still a celebration we want to share with you because this year we really need something to celebrate…

Please, please continue safe practices and please bring a mask when you come visit us at the store.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
