Wine News

This week we have a handful of new Rose’s for you and a bit of addition to France. As always, we have the shelves stocked and ready for you!

Dan’s Feature

Rose’ from Tavel has always been one of my favorites and I’ve been drinking it for the past 43 years. Tavel is an appellation of the Rhône Valley that only produces Rose’ and received it’s AOC status in 1936. That pretty much means that over the past 84 years, this region has focused on one solitary thing… making the best Rose’ they can within the appellation. Domaine Lafond 2020 Roc-Epine may not be the same bottle that I had 43 years ago, but it is Tavel. Pascal Lafond’s beautifully made wines from Tavel are among the finest values the region has to offer. This 65-hectare family-run estate, located in the rose-only appellation of Tavel, produces what is widely considered (by Robert Parker, among others) to be the best Tavel available. Being comprised of 60% Grenache, 10% Cinsault, 5% Syrah, 5% Carignan and the remaining 5% of Clairette, Picpoul, Bourboulenc, Mourvèdre round out this complex Rose’. This 90+ Rose’ is appropriately priced at $21.99 and while I didn’t get many, I have one down here waiting for you.

Dan’s Pick

I forgot about how much I like Muscadet, so my pick for this week is one of my favorites, Domaine Des Quartes 2019 Muscadet Sevre Et Maine. Is it sweet? No. The varietal is Melon de Burogogne and has always been my typical go to for shellfish, but I reminded myself last week how good it was all by itself. And if anyone’s got pedigree in Muscadet, it’s the Poiron family. They began growing and producing wine in the early 1800’s and over the past two centuries have elevated their vineyard holdings from the original 1.2 hectares to it’s current standing of 39 hectares. So I’m pretty certain, they’ve figured out how to produce this fantastic crisp, bright and lightly acidic wine. The Muscadet region on the Loire’s Atlantic coast has long occupied a spot alongside seafood and river fish specialties alike. Vinified entirely of the Melon de Bourgogne varietal and aged on the lees for six months prior to bottling, Eric Poiron’s Muscadet is clean, careful, and zippy. A bottle of this wine with a dozen oysters and you’ll soon be speaking French.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
