Updated: Dec 16, 2022

A little reminder for all:

10 Days till Christmas

17 Days till the end of 2022!!!

Hours of Operation

Monday – Saturday

10am to 6pm

Calendar 🗓

Dec 25 (Sun) - Christmas Day (Closed)

Jan 14 (Sat) - It’s Pappa al Pomodoro all day long. Not interested in a rich tomato peasant soup? Fine, we’ll also be serving Mortadella sandwiches. It just seems like the thing to do on a cold Saturday in January. On top of that, if you’re interested in going to Italy any time soon, Gianni will also be in the back room from 1:00 to 4:00 answering questions and sharing information about 2023 trips.

Jan 21 (Sat) - It’s back… Oyster-O-Rama. That’s right, but this time we’re bringing in a few more maybe like 200 more! On the half shell, New Orleans style, or Rockefeller. Have them your way Saturday, all day!

Store News 🏬

We’re holding steady down here, keeping the racks full, and building special orders. Wines come in almost every day, and when you add the beer deliveries on top of three food deliveries, we’re keeping busy... but not too busy to help you in your gifting this holiday season, or simply in choosing what’s best for Christmas dinner, be it wine, beer, or food fare!

Wine News🍷

Just a few to mention here… of course my feature and pick. I’ve also found that our reserve wines were being ravaged, so I began a quick search for some great reds that just scream "OPEN ME" for Christmas. Other than that, we’re just doing our best to keep everyone's favorites in the racks.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️

My feature this week is Baron Philippe de Rothschild 2018 Chateau d’Armailhac Bordeaux from Pauillac, France. When I can pick up a 90+ Bordeaux, especially of this pedigree, for $80, I buy it. This Grand Cru wine is what one expects from a Rothschild second growth property. It's comprised of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, making this a classic Right Bank Bordeaux. Tasting notes describe this wine as follows: “the wine has a deep colour with a garnet hue. The rich, packed nose opens on aromas of blackberry and marzipan. With airing, the initial fruit is complemented by an array of spice and dark chocolate notes. This powerful and well-structured wine reveals peppery and slightly minty flavors, leading into a mid-palate underpinned by elegant and dense tannins on roasted coffee-bean and liquorice notes, a long and smooth finish rounds off a remarkably harmonious wine.” Elegant wine for an elegant meal or an elegant gift, either way you should probably pick one up because they’re just that good.

Dan’s Pick 🥂

Chateau De Beauregard-Ducourt 2020 Entre Deux Mers Bordeaux Blanc is my pick for this week. So I tried this wine alongside my feature and made the decision to buy this before the feature. Only $15 for a Bordeaux Blanc? Sure, I’m in. Why did I like it so much? Well, take a look at the tasting notes: “Pale straw green color. Fresh aromas and flavors of fresh sliced lime, soft melons, spring grasses, and marigold with a satiny, crisp, fruity light-to-medium body and a seamless, delightful, medium-length finish with no oak flavor. A satiny white Bordeaux that refreshes; this one will pair effortlessly with all occasions.” I like Bordeaux Blanc because it doesn’t carry all the acidity that a typical Sauvignon Blanc carries. This bottle appears a bit more complex, rounder on the palate, and great for accompanying oh so many foods. Hey, it’s the right price, and if you choose to get both the feature and the pick, you’ve got your wines for Christmas dinner all taken care of.

Food News 🦃

What’s for for Christmas dinner? We have a full complement of items to share with you: 6-bone 5lb racks of Veal, Mortons 12oz Bone-In Choice Beef Tenderloin cuts, and as we’ve been telling you, we still have “Prime” Prime Rib for Christmas, and at these prices, they won’t last long: $23.99 a pound for Prime and $16.99 for Choice. On another note, if you’re looking for shrimp for shrimp cocktail, let us know. You can either take it home yourself at $19.99 per pound and remove the shell and cook it up, or we clean and cook whatever weight you want for $24.99 per pound. Oishi Shrimps are large 16/20s per pound and about as tasty of a shrimp as you can ever have. Need cocktail sauce? We can handle that as well.

Food Feature 🐟

Ahi Tuna is this weeks food feature: #1 Premium/Sushi grade Tuna. Personally I’m looking at a lot of beef coming my way, so a great fish such as this fresh Tuna will be a nice reprieve. Ordered before 11am on Monday, these fish will be caught in the wee hours of Tuesday, transferred through Boston and Canton, MI, and brought to me this afternoon. I know where this fish has been, I know who handled it, and I’m pretty sure I know a few customers that are going to buy it. It’s $29.99 a pound but worth every single penny of it.

Final Thoughts 💬

Looks like with Christmas on a Sunday, we’ll be able to order specials up to the about the 19th or the 20th -- keep in mind, however, that back stock from distributors is thin. I’ll repeat my mantra once again: shop early, shop often, let us know if you’re looking for something special, and we’ll do our best to try and get it in.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
