Awww, shucks… it's all about the oysters this week!!!

Hours of Operation

Monday – Saturday

10am to 6pm

Calendar 🗓

Jan 21 (Sat) - Oyster Day this Saturday! That’s right, this Saturday from 10am until they’re gone. We brought in 700 + Oysters --- that’s over 58 dozen! Have them your way: on the half shell, New Orleans style, or Rockefeller. We’re ready to start shucking...

Feb. 14 (Tues) - Valentine's Day Dinner (reservations required)

Feb. 21 (Tues) - It’s Fat Tuesday, and that means a variety of Cajun specials will be served up for this annual event. No reservations; just hearty appetites and an attitude of "laissez les bons temps rouler!"

Store News 🏬

I’m trying to pick up bargains for the market, keeping a close eye on beef and shellfish. I mean, if there’s anything I want to fill our freezers with, it’s steaks and lobsters. Sure, I want shrimp and scallops, but price will dictate. No matter what, we can still make up a great dinner for you and yours.

Wine News🍷

We’re beginning to see a few more new wines roll in. Sales reps are pulling samples, and we’re bringing out the tasting glasses. One of the items in this week is a big Shiraz from the Barossa Valley of which only 80 cases were produced. Another is a great new Cabernet that will give a few big names a run for their money. The bottom line is it’s time for some new wines, so stop in and check out what’s in the racks.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️

My feature this week is the 2018 Argyle Vintage Brut because that’s the sparkling wine I’ll be drinking with oysters on Saturday! Argyle is just one of those Columbia Valley producers that tend to overdeliver on all of their products. This is that sparkling wine that’s well-priced at $27.99 -- it doesn’t break the bank and drinks nearly as well as its French counterparts. Whether it’s a celebration or a just a silly Saturday, this vintage designated sparkling wine is a perfect choice.

Dan's Pick 🥂 Chateau de Thauvenay 2021 Sancerre is my pick for this week. I’m actually bringing in this wine to make it available as a glass pour for this weekend for our special event. The other reason, however, is the fact that it’s half the price of any other Sancerre on the market -- at $18.99 it’s a steal! Sancerre has had a resurgence in the marketplace. Once, it was a little-known Sauvignon Blanc from the village of Sancerre in the Loire Valley. In the past few years, it’s become more and more popular, making it sometimes difficult to bring in. While perusing our distributors, I stumbled across this little wine and decided to bring one in to try. It was quite good. Does it drink like a $38 bottle? No, but I can buy two of these and enjoy them that much longer. I’m not trying to undersell because I’m already pretty good at that. I just like finding bargains to share with all of you.

Food Feature 🦪

This week’s feature should be obvious…OYSTERS! We enjoy bringing in these beautiful bi-valves, and this week even more than usual with more than 700 in our refrigerator. We only buy oysters from regions where the water temperatures are frigidly cold, and this week they’re coming in from our favorite region, the PEI of Canada, as well as Massachusetts and the Chesapeake Bay.

Final Thoughts 💬

I’m not always sure why I do the things I do down here… maybe just to see if I still can? At the time, it sounded like a good idea? I foolishly took a suggestion from others for whatever reason and brought in 700 oysters for this Saturday. It might just be a bit much... sure, Chelsea and I are pretty good shuckers, but even if we each do 350 at approximately 20 seconds an oyster (may be dreaming here), it’s over an hour each. Needless to say, there’s going to be some bloodshed down here, but hey, it’s a challenge that we’re ready to accept. See you this Saturday!

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
