News 🗞

Things have definitely slowed down here as the month rolls to a close. We were going to take a break from food specials this week to save up our energy for next weekend's festivities... but you know how good we are at that. So we will be doing a Pizza Special this weekend: Italian Sausage & Peppers Pizza, with Italian Sausage that we made from scratch ourselves. A flatbread, red sauce, peppers, onions, roasted garlic, mozzarella, and that delicious Italian Sausage cooked directly on the pizza so it's nice and juicy and full of flavor. We will start serving those tonight and run through Saturday as supplies last. (Keep in mind if you're planning to come for lunch on Saturday, we are closing the bar at 1pm through 4pm for a private event, so come earlier!) That said, we're working on details for next weekend... Art Walk & Friday Night Wine Tasting, and hopefully something fun for Car Tunes, so make sure to check out next week's newsletter for more details on that.

Wine Feature ⭐️

This week's feature is a special one, Vermillion 2019 Proprietary Red by winemaker (and native Ohioan) Helen Keplinger, voted last year's Winemaker of the Year by Vinous Media. Across several projects and properties, Keplinger's wines often run well over $100 and achieve 95+ points. This bottle, similar to the Thorn-Clarke Shotfire Shiraz we all loved a few months ago, is "leftover" from several of her other, higher-end wines, meaning you get the premium juice for a bargain price. It's a Rhône-style blend comprised of mostly Grenache from the Sierra Foothills with small additions from Napa and Sonoma. "This is a serious Rhone-style red with the complexity and palate to show for it. Keplinger Winery’s 2nd label, 'leftover' blend (It’s so good, you can only imagine what the first-cut wines are like). The nose gives off beautiful layers of wild strawberry, black licorice and graphite followed by insane flavors of red and black fruit, dried herbs, and a red vine finish." It is "beautifully balanced, has fine tannins, no hard edges, and a clean, dry finish that keeps you coming back to the glass." Only 400 cases were produced, so I'm not sure how long this one will last in the store... at $29.99, I'm sure it won't be long.

Wine Pick 🥂

A Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa? Apparently. Our pick this week is Savage 2022 Salt River Sauvignon Blanc for $21.99. Winemake Duncan Savage worked under some big names in South Africa before venturing off on his own and is known as Capetown's "maestro of wine." This "beautifully complex and intense" bottle has lemon, apple, and herbs on the nose, while the palate gives zesty grapefruit, tangerine, and orange blossom followed by a saline finish. It is made from grapes from two different locations: an inland source in Stellenbosch and a martime source near Walker Bay in the Western Cape, the salty air there being what gives it that salinity and minerality. If you lately, like us, have been enjoying French Sauvignon Blancs, you should give this one a try.

Food Features 🐟🥩

It's been weeks since we've had a white fish in the store due to fluctuating prices, but this week not only do we have one, we have one that's a heck of a deal: Fresh Halibut from the cold waters of Canada for $19.99/lb. That's at least $5/lb less than the prices we've been seeing. This fish is a real beauty, too. We cut some of it up yesterday and were amazed at how perfect it looked, like a stock photo. This fish is a workhorse. "Halibut is such an easy-to-cook fish and is very forgiving in the flavor department thanks to its mild slightly sweet taste. Since halibut is firmer than most fish it can be prepared in a myriad of ways such as pan-seared, grilled, baked, or broiled." Bake it with olive oil, salt, and pepper... pan sear it with an herbed lemon sauce... crust it with sesame seeds and top with a soy glaze... the options are endless. We also got Teres Major Steaks back in! Except this time, they are Prime, so even better if you can imagine that. Same price, $19.99/lb.

Oyster Feature 🦪

We experimented last week with a couple of new oyster varieties, but we are back to Pink Moons from PEI this week.

Final Thoughts 💬

Well with all the extra time we had this week, we decided to finally change up the food menu. The change being... meats and cheeses are gone. Are you panicking??? Don't worry, we have plenty of both, but instead of offering them individually, we decided to offer various sizes of our boards that we will build for you. This will allow us to have a more rotating selection so that we can bring in new things for you to enjoy as we find them, and it will reduce choice overload for you. That said, if you want something specific, just ask. We also added a couple of new items, plus a seasonal selection that will also rotate throughout the year. We're here to keep things interesting! We only ask that you keep trusting us to do just that.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
