Wine News

While it appears we’re fully Rose’d up there will always be room for more but currently we have 20 different fresh and fun Rose’s up front for you. I’ve said this before but it is proving more and more to be true this years Rose’s may be the best thing that came out of 2020. We still have a couple spaces left for next Saturday’s Rose’ tasting so if you haven’t signed up give us a call and we’ll pencil you in.

Dan’s Wine Feature

Same wine, new name… Owen Roe vineyards has always produced a great Cabernet at a great price. Sharecropper has been a favorite for the store for years but however there’s been a name change, this old favorite is now called “Growers Guild Cabernet”. This Washington State Cabernet at $16.99 is not only a bargain but, drinks beautifully. Tasting notes describe this wine as, “Always a crowd favorite, the 2017 vintage proves to be another great attempt at creating a fruit forward, yet bold Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine exudes juicy aromas of pomegranate, blackberry and tobacco spice. Flavors of red plums, hints of eucalyptus and mint with a balanced mouth-feel. This Cabernet finishes smooth with bright acidity and firm tannins”. We’ve always enjoyed this wine and just wanted to assure you that although the name has changed the wine has not!

Dan’s Pick

My pick this week is not just a Rose’ but a celebratory one as well, Chemistry Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Bubbles is just what you need for that special event or tonight on the patio. Chemistry happens to be collaboration between two great Columbia Valley estates, Stoller and Chehalem. Both of these producers are renowned for their Pinots and of course their Rose’s and now they’ve joined together to bring us this new $19.99 sparkling wine. Tasting notes describe this refreshing, slightly effervescent rosé as the perfect aperitif that can be paired with many different foods. Notes of watermelon with hints of peaches and cream. The palate is juicy and vibrant, making for an unexpected delight, with flavors of tart strawberry and a dry finish. What else needs to be said, this bottle is just waiting for a fridge and an empty glass.

Food News

You’re probably tired of hearing the news and I know I am… beef prices are through the roof. We brought in very little this week because in some instances we’ve seen triple price increases on products in just one week. We bought big two weeks ago so we’re pretty well set for this week but I know what’s coming when we repurchase for next week. If you have a desire for a nice Prime cut come in this week and grab a few before the increase hits us here.

Food Feature of the Week

The ugliest fish I’ve ever seen is my feature for this week, I didn’t choose it for its looks, I chose for its diet! Icelandic Wolf Fish feeds on lobster, crab and any other delightful creatures it can find. These fillets are the silkiest and softest fish that we have come across and preparation is as simple as can be. Stove top, butter and seasoning, then cook from translucent to opaque and you’ll be having one of the tastiest pieces of flaky, rich white fish that you have ever had. Priced appropriately at $16.99 per pound this may just be what you you’re having for dinner tonight.

Final Thought

We’ve been enjoying seeing those of you who have stopped in for a drink or two and appetizers and continue to look forward to seeing even more of you. The constant question of will we ever go back to what we were before is simpler for me to answer. If you’ve stopped in you’ve seen the entire staff Chelsea, Tara and Kim, two of those have limited availability and well me, I haven’t taken a day off in 17 months. We can only do that which we can, do we want to hire more staff? of course we do, but new employees have become a rarity. We are very happy where we are right now and are excited to have the Bar back open.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
