Wine News

While some bottles still seem to be difficult to acquire, we’re pretty pleased with not only keeping the shelves full but also in bringing in new Wines, Beers and Cocktails. Always check out what new for this week and what’s back in stock. We’ll keep things interesting for you, hope to see you soon.

Dan’s Feature

This week’s feature is one of my favorites, B.Leighton Olsen Brothers Vineyard 2018 Gratitude. We’ve been that guy that buys as much of this wine as we can get our hands on. This wine first came to our attention a few years ago and was a sleeper until we tasted it and then researched it. Brandon Leighton is the wine maker for “K” Vintners and while we have always been fans of Charles Smith’s wine we are fanatical about Brandon’s wines. Here’s what he has to say about it, “If you're looking for something to be thankful for, look no further... Here it is in a glass. Rushing at you with black plum, white pepper, spring flowers, cured meats and baked clay, and inviting you again with blood orange, grilled thyme, nutmeg and sage. So wonderful and enjoyable that you must invite a friend to partake”. This Rhone Blend is a co-fermented wine comprised of 70% Mourvédre, 25% Grenache, 5% Syrah and another 100% deliciousness! While priced at $49.99 this 90+ rated wine is still a bargain.

Dan’s Pick

Another Red as my Choice for this week, You Bet! The last lunch I went to with a winemaker seems like ages ago but at that tasting I had a Zinfandel that was unbelievable and exclaimed that this would be a wine for our Friday Night Tasting and you know the rest of that story…Either way, I’ve continued to request this wine and had never been able to get it in. Surprise The 2019 Paso Robles Fableist Central Coast Zinfandel is now in the racks. This collaborative wine while inspired by the Fable the Scorpion and the Frog is described as “Black cherry and cinnamon on the nose with images of sugar plum fairies dancing through your head. Hints of black tea and plum skin as you take your first sip, leaving you grateful for Paso’s precious Zin”. I said a few years back that I would pair a Mounds Almond Joy with this wine, however I don’t sell those candy bars so adjusting that thought I’d pair this lush $19.99 Zinfandel with a great Kurobuta Pork Chop glazed in Mike’s Hot Honey!

Food News

*BACK IN STOCK!!! Frantoio Sanminiatese Extra Virgin Olive Oil …

Watching the food market prices are worse than following the stock market… Besides the fact that the nations largest restaurant supply company has canceled deliveries two weeks in a row due to labor shortages we’ve seen prices continually rise. Items which we have been carrying since we began this model have out priced themselves. While I’m sure you’ve seen some of the same things occurring at the grocery store it’s become a lot larger problem for restaurants. We pride ourselves in sourcing the finest beef and seafood available to high-end restaurants to share with you. While we’re still able to offer these products to you it may necessitate some minimal price increases for the near future.

Food Feature of the Week

Fresh Yellowfin Tuna is my feature for this week. While priced at $24.99 a pound it seems expensive but when also recognizing the fact that no one should eat a whole pound of this fish it becomes much more reasonable. What’s a serving, 8-10 ounces is a perfect serving size of this fabulous fish. I covered a piece in Everything Bagel Seasoning seared it on the stove top on both sides and removed it from the heat. I was more than pleased with the presentation and definitely, definitely the Tuna!

Final Thought

Not sure where this month has gone but it’s going by way to fast…I find it hard to believe that the 4th of July is a little over a week away. After feeling like time literally stopped a year ago I suddenly feel like I’m always racing to catch up. Let’s be serious I finished this newsletter a day early but that doesn’t mean I won’t be woefully behind tomorrow…

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
