News 🗞

Hopefully you all survived the Great Storm... it was probably about what they forecasted, but way more than I predicted. When have they ever been right before??? When have I ever been wrong??? Don't answer that. We made it through, and now we have to face bitter cold and try not to slip on the ice. Just another January. You may or may not have seen on social media that during the storm -- during which we were of course here and open, as promised, mailman's oath and all -- we put on tap the much-anticipated annual release from Bell's Brewery, Hopslam. So obviously that means that this weekend, we will see the return of... Hopslamwiches! This is a sandwich of Rye Bread piled high with Black Forest Ham then topped with Dijon Mustard and Swiss Cheese, smothered in a fondue made with Hopslam of course, with a pickle on top and salad on the side. I mean, this is a SANDWICH. Serving Friday afternoon/evening and all day Saturday while supplies last. A warm, savory sandwich and a pint of Hopslam, can't ask for more. Perfect way to round out the month. Don't forget that means Valentine's Day is just two weeks away, so if you are interested in a Valentine's Day Meal Kit, give us a call. We're happy to put that together for you.

Wine Feature ⭐️

There are a lot of Caymus fans around this town, so we've been known to keep in Chuck Wagner's everyday Cabernet, Bonanza, but this week we come to you with a special release... Bonanza "The Vinekeeper" Cabernet Sauvignon. This multi-vintage Cellar Select Cab is the first of many in this new series from Chuck, which in true Bonanza spirit he created to highlight all the riches that California has to offer... in wine form, of course. Each release will be from a different viticultural region, with the debut, Lot 1, of course highlighting the best of the best, Napa Valley. It's just as big and rich and juicy as you imagine it is. "Full-bodied and fruit-driven, Lot 1 is plush and polished, showing ripe blackberry, juicy plum, and cocoa-dusted cherries with a kiss of toasty oak. It’s a beautifully balanced Cab that delivers the signature richness of Napa at a down-to-earth price." Try a bottle of this limited release from the big man himself for $34.99.

Wine Pick 🥂

Have to get this one out of the way before Lent starts... Alexander Valley Vineyards 2021 Sin Zin from of course Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Alexander Valley Vineyards, which is still family-owned, just celebrated their 50th anniversary last year, and they've been making this wine for almost the same amount of time. "Varietally distinct, this bottle captures the true essence of Alexander Valley." Fruit is sourced from lots all throughout Alexander Valley with various microclimates, providing winemaker Kevin Hall with a lot of unique fruit that he blends to create his final product. This bottle is 95% Zinfandel with a bit of Petite Sirah in there to add spice to the finish. "This aromatic wine has a solid core of red and black fruits with rich spicy flavors of blueberry, black cherry, topped with black pepper and chocolate. This is a rich, layered vintage with great balance and a long finish." Try a bottle that has truly stood the test of time for the whopping price of $11.99.

Oysters 🦪

Two oysters this week, Firesides and Black Points. Firesides were one of the three we had on Oyster Day, and though it was close, they seemed like the favorite of the day, so we got another batch so more of you could try them. Firesides were the ones from Cape Cod where the salty water of the cape meets fresh water from a creek. They are plump, meaty, and salty with a vegetal note, probably 3 inches in size. Good on the half shell or baked. Black Points are from Prince Edward Island, a similar in size. They taste similar to Malpeques and shine on the half shell, the perfect balance of sweetness and brine.

Final Thoughts 💬

Thanks to all who paid us a visit on Oyster Day last weekend (I still haven't recovered) and also to those who stopped in even during a Level 3 weather alert. Two very different circumstances, but we were equally grateful to see you during both. We truly do have the best customers. Now let's see what the last few days of January brings us...

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
