News

Are you ready for the loudest day of the year??? I’m not, but at least I can say I’m stocked up. If you haven’t made your food and beverage purchases for tomorrow, we are open until 8pm today, (if there are people here we'll be here) and looking forward to seeing you. Don’t forget that we are closed tomorrow, but we’ll be back open on Friday at 10am, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready for the weekend… keep your eye on our social media. We will be cooking up a weekend food special for you.

Wine Feature ️

The feature this week — a red and white bottle, mind you — is Catena 2021 San Carlos Cabernet Franc from Mendoza, Argentina. The Catena family, who have been family vintners for over 100 years, is extremely well-known in South America for their pioneering of high-altitude viticulture… AKA, making wine in the mountains. We have carried several of their wines over the years, but this Cab Franc is relatively new to us. It’s big, velvety, and pairs with almost anything… meats, red sauce, spicy foods, chocolate, cheese, you name it. “The nose offers elegant aromas of spices, and fresh herbs as thyme and rosemary, red berries, cassis and raspberries, with layers of cedar. The mouthfeel is full and rich with cassis, raspberries flavors and notes of black pepper and oregano. The finish is bright and fresh with finely grained tannins.” It’s good value at $24.99 for a wine that’s been awarded 92-93 points by the professionals. This professional? I’d drink it. That’s all you need to know.

Wine Pick

This week’s pick — a blue bottle… see what I did there… — is Jules Taylor 2020 Better Half Pinot Noir. Have you ever had a Pinot Noir from New Zealand? Sauvignon Blanc has been, and probably always will be, their dominant grape, but vineyards are growing selection of Pinot Noir there as well, as winemakers discover some of the land is suitable for one of the world’s toughest grapes. If you can grow Pinot… you grow Pinot. Winemakers George and Jules Taylor, the latter of which is the former winemaker for Kim Crawford, of course decided to join the charge. “With a palate full of juicy red fruit, this wine flaunts raspberry, cherry, and plum flavors, well balanced with chocolate undertones and a hint of spice.” It pairs well with grilled meats and roasted vegetables, both of which may be on your menu for tomorrow. Grab a bottle or two for $19.99.

Food Features

We’re back to the 3 Bs: Burgers, Brats, and Buns. We have a few different kinds of Burgers in for your grill tomorrow… Fresh Wagyu Burgers, 4-packs for $17.99, and Chuck Prime Burgers, frozen 5-packs for $14.99. For Brats, we have Fresh Jalapeño Cheddar Brats from our friends up at Rinaldi, 5-packs for $8.99, and we also have some Frozen Weisswurst. If you haven’t had Weisswurst, you’re missing out. It’s a traditional Bavarian sausage made from veal and pork. It’s mild but perfectly balanced in flavor, which means even your picky kids might like it. It’s traditionally cooked in hot water, but I think it would be even better on the grill. And don’t forget, we’ve got the buns to go with everything! Brioche Buns, both Hot Dog and Hamburger, for $3.99.

Final Thoughts

As always, let’s take a moment to remember why we celebrate tomorrow. In a country with so much turmoil and where politics and vitriol take center stage, especially in an election year such as this, we can forget that our freedoms are not a guarantee. In the still-true words of Thomas Jefferson, “All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man… For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.”

Cheers and Happy 4th from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
