I remember it like it was yesterday, that’s right Earth Day 1970! Not the entire day but at least the early morning hours…
Hours of Operation
Monday – Saturday
10am to 6pm!
Calendar
May 6 - Art Walk we’ll be open till 8pm to share this evening with you. Stop in for DORA drinks and if you are hungry, we’ll put a pizza on for you.
May 7 - It’s Patio & Porchetta Saturday! A succulent pork belly wrapped around the loin and stuffed with sausage and Italian seasoning… we’re going to roast it, cheese it and dress it with truffle mayo and rappini then serve it on a toasted naan. Or, if you’d like, we’ll do it as a porchetta pizza. This all-day love affair with the pig will be from noon to 6pm! Also on the cold drink front, we’ll be serving Limoncello Spritzes! Cooperative weather or not, this will be the first Saturday for the 2022 Patio season…
Store News
We’re looking forward to Art Walk and bringing the Patio out. While the seasons may not be changing fast enough for many of us, we’re pretty much guaranteed that a full blown Spring is just around the corner. Mother’s Day will be upon us before you know it. We’ll be putting together a Mother’s Day meal package for this year’s celebration and we will be calculating the price at $19.99 per person times the # of persons. So if there’s 5 of you well it’s simple 5 x $19.99 =s $99.95. The meal will include an entree of Butternut Squash Ravioli with a butter and sage sauce, Brittany blend vegetables and dessert, accompanied with a beautiful bottle of 2021 Rose’. Please call to reserve your box now, just let us know how many you’ll be serving for this year’s celebration and we will take care of the rest.

Post off pricing… what’s that mean exactly? Post off pricing is used as a means for distributors to discount wines for two reasons: 1) for purposes of having a WAS price and a NOW price which you see all the time in grocery stores. Many times Post off pricing is the actual retail price, while something called Front Line Pricing is used by grocery stores as a mirage to mark it as a “Deal” and then sell the product at the Post off price. 2) Other times, however, Post Off pricing is quite legitimate and is used by distributors to move inventory— be it older vintages or wines that may be discontinued. These are the wines we like! Wines legitimately marked down to move inventory is what we look for…
Dan’s Feature
We have a couple big legitimate Post Off wines for our feature this week. Both come from Charles Smith K Vintners Wines of Washington. The first is his 2018 “The Creator” at $59.99 and the second is his 2014 “Royal City Syrah” at $106.99. The Creator was originally brought to us at $79.99 and we are quite pleased to have this at the current price. Royal City was originally sold for $159.99 and we were able to get a few bottles at $106.99. Both of these big, elegant wines are rated mid 90s. Royal City is 100% Syrah and The Creator is 75% Cabernet and 25% Syrah. I’ve always been a fan of Charles Smith wines and actually remember opening both of these bottles on one of my birthdays and enjoyed sharing them with family and friends. If someone is quick they could pick one of these up for a great Mother’s or Father’s Day gift. Just putting it out there two great bottles for two great celebrations…
Dan’s Pick
Daou 2021 Rose’ is my pick for this week. Daou was inspired by the renowned rosé wines of Provence, France. Their 2021 DAOU Discovery Collection Rosé remains faithful to its origins. This wine is remarkably fragrant, offering generous aromas of fresh peach, Bartlett pear and nectarine, with subtle notes of hyacinth, apricot and crushed rose petals. The palate is delightfully silky, underlying a clean, fresh crispness delivering enticing flavors of mango, Crenshaw melon, lemon chiffon and tangerine. Secondary layers reveal hints of sweet cherry and vanilla with orange peel accents. A luxurious and lasting finish leaves traces of apple pie, strawberry and kiwi. I firmly believe every word of the above. Daou is a staple at the store, we enjoy having their 2021 Rose’ on the shelf and look forward to sharing this $20.99 bottle with you real soon.
Food News
We’re not seeing anything go down in price. Purveyors have their own difficulties in procuring goods and most definitely in delivering them. Fortunately, we still have a great company that pulls it off every single week. Fresh fish doesn’t seem to be a problem but beef prices remain high and my fear is that we may not see them come down. We still enjoy bringing in specialty foods be it our large scallops or our dry aged prime beef cuts. Whenever you’re looking for something special, give us a call and we’ll see what we can do for you.
Food Feature
My food feature for this week is Coulotte. Coulotte is a steak that is boneless, lean cut derived from the sirloin tip, which is located at the top of the short loin, just below the tenderloin. Narrow and long in shape (2 in. wide, 4 in. long, and ½ in. thick), the coulotte is quite tender and boasts a bold amount of flavor, but is also very lean. This cut is also referred to as Picanha, and is the cut that is featured in Brazilian steak houses. We’ve carried this cut before, but as I’m hoping for better weather and maybe a bit more items needed for the grill, I wanted to share this cut with you again. You’ll never find this in a meat counter at the grocers, this is a butcher’s cut or a cut that is reserved for restaurants. We have them available as whole cuts weighing approximately 1.5 to 2.5 pounds each and are priced at $13.99 a pound. This tender, meaty and beefy cut will be delicious coming off your grill. Stop in and pick one up and try something new off the grill, you’ll love it!

Final Thoughts
I’m sure 52 years ago I wasn’t thinking about someday owning a wine shop in Findlay, Ohio. I’m not even sure I was thinking about the environment that day. However, when I think back to what was then and what is now, I begin to realize that maybe I should have paid more attention to our environment. When I see what’s happening in Champagne and see the travails of the western fires in California, I’m suddenly much more aware of what is happening to property and lands that we never thought could be influenced by changing weather patterns. Yes, I was concerned about the environment in 1970 but just maybe I was more enthralled by the thrills of youth…
Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
