News 🗞
How in the world is it Memorial Day already??? I swear Cinco de Mayo was last week, St. Patrick's Day the week before that. That means a couple of housekeeping items to discuss before we move on: we will be closed on Monday for the holiday, and the bar will be closed on Saturday from 11:30-2 for our annual Rosé tasting (store will remain open). We have a few spots left for the tasting if you'd like to attend on Saturday, so give us a call if you're interested. Otherwise, we're ready to fulfill all your grilling needs this weekend... if the rain ever stops. We've got Fresh Short Rib Burgers, Wagyu Hot Dogs, Brioche Buns, and most importantly... Steaks. Frozen Wagyu Baseballs and Tenderloins, and Fresh Hand-Cut CAB Bone-In Ribeyes. Truly, they are beautiful pieces of meat and would impress anyone attending your cookout this weekend. Come grab a few before they're gone because they won't last long.
Wine Feature ⭐️
This week's feature is the Famille Bourgeois 2020 Petit Clos Pinot Noir from... no, not France. Did I trick you? This Pinot is from Marlborough, New Zealand, land of Sauvignon Blanc. New Zealand actually has a great climate for growing Pinot Noir, and more and more vineyards are shifting some of their production to it or moving from other parts of the world specifically to grow it, as is the case here. The Bourgeois family have been renowned winemakers in Sancerre for ten generations. When brothers Jean-Marie and Rèmy inherited the estate in the 1980s, they decided to expand internationally. They searched for the perfect location for 12 years before settling in Marlborough in 2000, where they found soils most similar to their native Sancerre and where they knew Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir would both thrive. The organically-grown 2020 Petit Clos comes from three different types of soil, creating a complex wine with notes of strawberry, black cherry, rose petals, and slate, with surprisingly firm tannins and some jamminess, and wood spice and black pepper on the finish. You can drink it now or hold it for a few years. If you're interested in trying a Pinot Noir from this unique terroir, you can do so for $31.99.

Wine Pick 🥂
With Rosé in May this weekend, it's only right that I pick a rosé... HB Chevalier 2024 Rosé from the southern coast of France, only $12.99 a bottle. Don't let the price fool you -- this is a classic rosé, light and crisp and mineral-forward in style, which is typical of southern France. In 2022, this wine was comprised of 100% Grenache. In 2023, they added Cinsault, and now in 2024, they've added a third grape, Syrah. The 2024 vintage is so new, critics and publications haven't even had a chance to review it yet, but you can bet it will be good, fresh and round on the palate with notes of strawberries and red currant, a bright citrus acidity, and mineral on the finish from the limestone soils. Graduation parties, cookouts, picnics, you name it, and this is the perfect bottle.

Oyster(s) of the Week 🦪
The new oysters this week are Summersides from Prince Edward Island. Out of Alberton on the ocean-facing northwest side of the island, Summerside Oysters are plump, clean, and elegant. They have great shuckability and a really nice finish. Around 3 inches in size, moderately briny with plump meats and a complex sweet, vegetal finish.

Final Thoughts 💬
I'm sure it's a crazy week for most of you... the end of school, final exams, graduation preparations and celebrations, and Memorial Day weekend on top of it all. In the midst of everything, make sure to take some time on Monday to remember the holiday and why we celebrate it: to honor all those who gave their lives for ours. Let's also take a moment to remember... Norm. George Wendt passed away this week, and for many of us, he was a weekly visitor to our homes for many years. His loss reminds us of those who we have lost here, and reminds us how valuable each and every one of you are. To those of you heading out of town, travel safely. Those who remain, we hope to see you here this weekend.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
