News 🗞

It's a big weekend for us down here at the Wine Merchant. Sunday is obviously Mother's Day, and we've got some special treats, wines, and a beautiful bottle of Champagne for that. Saturday is both the United Way Downtown Chocolate Tour and our Rosé Tasting. Yes, I know it's Second Saturday and we usually have a food special for that, BUT three events in one day is simply too much for us. Gotta know our limits... and the girls make sure to remind me of mine 😬 We did reorder the Burrata to continue serving at the bar, so if you wanted some over the past couple of weeks but it was sold out, this weekend may be your chance. Keep in mind our hours will adjust a little on Saturday due to the tasting. The store will be open all day (10a-8p), with the Downtown Chocolate Tour taking place 11a-3p. The bar will be closed from 11:30a to 2p for the tasting, but open after that as usual until 8p with our regular menu on offer. Speaking of menu, we are inching closer to our new wine list and food list. Keep your eyes on next week's newsletter...

Wine Feature ⭐️

The feature this week is Flowers 2022 Pinot Noir. Flowers is a winery in Sonoma that specializes in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and they've been around and perfecting their craft for over 30 years. They farm organically and biodynamically from rugged plots on the edge of the "far" Sonoma coast, in their words "in the pursuit of crafting wines representative of time and place." I can't describe this wine better than the winemaker does: "This fine-spun Pinot Noir opens with fresh aromas of coastal evergreens and wildflowers. Hints of early-season cherries follow, macerated in warm spices (anise, cardamom, allspice) and layered over earthy sandalwood. Ripe yet tangy dark berries, wearing a little dust from the patch, star on a lightly textured palate, giving way to savory herbs, delicately tannic red tea, and a pop of salty sea beans. A fascinating play of light fruit and dark spice is finished with a bright squeeze of orange peel." This is a truly delicious Pinot Noir, well worth the price at $55.99, which just so happens to be less than it is priced online!

Wine Pick 🥂

Villa Maria 2021 EarthGarden Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand, everyone's favorite. The name EarthGarden, as well as the label design, comes from the fact that wildflowers are planted amongst the vines to promote biodiversity and to replenish nutrients in the soil, creating not only a more conscientious wine but a more expressive one. This organic Sauvignon Blanc "has lifted aromas of citrus fruits, lime and grapefruit that leap from the glass. The flavours on the palate showcase fresh herbs, lemongrass and passionfruit. The intense fresh fruit concentration is balanced with zesty acidity and is perfectly thirst-quenching." At just $14.99, this wine would make a great gift for Mom or just a tasty bottle to have on the patio all summer long.

Food Feature 🍫

We've got all the meats this week... Fresh Prime Ribeye, Fresh Imperial Wagyu Tenderloin, Pork of all kinds and shapes and sizes, Frozen Lobster, Fresh Alaskan Halibut for a reduced price of $25.99/lb, and Fresh Skuna Salmon, which is new to the market and supposed to be the very best Vancouver has to offer AND is the official salmon of the James Beard Foundation. However, my feature this week is for everyone who needs a little treat to give Mom on Sunday: it's our array of Ethereal chocolate. We started carrying this around last Christmas, but we just got in a fresh shipment with some new flavors this past month with moms in mind. If you haven't tried it, Ethereal is a company out of Illinois focused on doing things right. It's all organic, ethically sourced, with no additives, preservatives, emulsifiers, gluten, dairy, or soy. We have several flavors, including some "Mama Bear Bark" that would be perfect for Mother's Day. Come try one... or if you're like me, all of them since you won't be able to narrow down.

Oyster Feature 🦪

Katama Bay Oysters are what's on offer this week. These Martha's Vineyard delicacies "are as pristine as the Vineyard: large, clean shells, deep cups, and an unforgettable brine. These oysters are raised in deeper waters where they benefit from the influences of the open ocean and its notable salinity." They are large in size and super salty with a sweet finish, perfect with a glass of bubbles.

Final Thoughts 💬

The time has finally arrived... I am off to Italy next week, and I couldn't be more ready. I will of course keep in touch with stories and photos... mostly of what I'm eating, of course. But before that, we have a full weekend, capped off with Mother's Day on Sunday. To all of the mothers out there, thank you. None of us would be here without you. We hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day, full of the love and respect (and wine) that you deserve.

Cheers and Happy Mother's Day from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
