News 🗞

Mother's Day is on Sunday... you didn't forget, did you? We almost did. Everything seems to be sneaking up on us this year. Someone gave us a call and asked if we had a Mother's Day Meal Kit going on and we said no, but then decided... hey, why not? So we put one together! Easy to buy, easy to prepare at home. For $60, you get the choice of either (1) 2 beef tenderloins and 2 au gratin potatoes, or (2) 2 pieces of crab-stuffed salmon and a bunch of fresh asparagus, and then both options come with 2 lemon raspberry dessert parfaits and a bottle of wine (three options available: a red, a rosé, and a sparkling). Get a package for two, or as many as you want to feed the whole family. If you are interested, let us know ASAP, by tonight or tomorrow morning ideally, so that we can have it prepared for you to pick up. So that's for Sunday, but Saturday is another Second Saturday already! We'll be serving up some classic Cubano sandwiches and Frozen Mojitos. The Cubanos will be a demi baguette with roasted pork loin, sliced ham, cheese, mustard, and pickles, served with a side of chips. Mojitos are of course the Cuban cocktail with rum, lime, and mint. So when you drop those kids off at prom on Saturday, come by here for a little taste of Cuba.

Wine Feature ⭐️

Last week we tried some new-to-us wines from Böen, and I'm happy to have them in the store for you this week. I'm featuring this bottle because I almost bought it by looks alone... luckily the wine matches the label in quality: Böen 2023 Reserve Pinot Noir. If you like the Böen Tri-App Pinot Noir that we normally keep in the store, you'll love this one at $39.99. Böen is of course one of Joey Wagner's wines (along with Quilt, Belle Glos, etc.), with this particular bottle receiving 95 points from Wine Enthusiast. It comes to us from the Santa Maria Valley AVA in Santa Barbara County, which is perfectly situated for Pinot Noir grapes, with foggy conditions and a strong Pacific breeze allowing for slow-ripening grapes that are full of elegant acidity and complexity. "On the palate, vibrant flavors of very ripe boysenberry, blueberry, and plum pie are complemented by layers of rosemary and cocoa. These flavors are balanced by firm tannins that carry through to a long, structured, and mouthwatering finish." It's simply a gorgeous wine that would pair with anything, and that any mother who drinks red wine would enjoy receiving this weekend. If you're lucky, she'll let you drink it with her.

Wine Pick 🥂

I looked at these and said, well there's a mama bottle and a baby bottle. So how could I pick anything else for this week??? Château de Campuget 1753 Rosé from France, the regular bottle for $19.99 and the 1.5L for $39.99. This is a classic Southern France rosé, pale in color and great with salmon, salads, grilled vegetables, poultry, or simply as an aperitif. It consists of 80% Syrah and 20% Vermentino, so it's almost like a blend of France and Italy. Doesn't that sound great? It has bright notes of grapefruit and red berries, with nice acidity and a delicate, dry finish. These glass-topped bottles are great for keeping and reusing, as well. Château de Campuget itself sits on a property that has been producing wine since 1640, so I'd hope they'd have the hang of it by now. The strong Medterranean sun, the Mistral winds, and the Rhône's rocky soil that forces vines to reach deep for water all come together to create a distinct and special terroir that creates wines like nowhere else.

Oyster(s) of the Week 🦪

Well I finally did it... ordered oysters straight from the producer and bypassed the middle man. Not so sure it's cost-effective, but the oysters are fantastic. Two options this week from Rhode Island: Beavertails and Umamis. Beavertails are from the deep, cold waters of the East Narragansett Bay, large with a nicely cupped shell, a clean brine, and a hint of sweetness. Umamis are from the same place but are very different. Small, taking four years to reach "cocktail size," but creamy and savory with that same hint of sweetness. Try one or both this weekend.

Final Thoughts 💬

If you're lucky enough to have your mom still around, make sure you celebrate her this weekend, in one way or another. To all the moms out there, we're grateful for you and all you do. I'm sure it's not easy running the world.. Dads, kids, husbands, make sure you treat her right... hopefully with a bottle or two of wine 😉

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
