NewsĀ šŸ—ž

You may not have noticed last week amidst all the excitement of Beaujolais Nouveau, but it was the annual release of Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2025. You know I'm at the computer anxiously awaiting the announcement every day of the week, then calling up my distributors to find out what I can get my hands on. This year was moderately successful... we got 2 of the Top 10 and 9 of the Top 30. I'm glad I moved quickly because most of them are already sold out with their respective distributors, so this might be your only chance to try them for a while. Stock up on some of these or on whatever other wines and foods you might need for Thursday. We'll be open until 8pm on Wednesay and then closed on Thursday. On Friday, we will be having a Black Friday Brunch. Fried Chicken and Waffles, Crown Maple Syrup, Bacon, and a keg of Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout. Come and take a break with a delicious meal or snack and a pour of beer, or fill up a growler... we'll also have a couple variations of the Bourbon County available for purchase in the store. Serving and selling all day while supplies last. Then Saturday is of course Small Business Saturday and GAME DAY. We'll have Ohio State v. Michigan on at noon, and to celebrate, we have a dozen or so Jumbo Meatballs... first come, first serve...

Wine Feature āļø

Of course it's the #3 wine of the year... Ridge 2023 Lytton Springs, from Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley. Ridge just makes good wine. They specialize in high-quality, single-vineyard Zinfandels and Zin blends from Sonoma, as well as the famous Monte Bello Bordeaux-style blend from the Central Coast. If you struggle with red wines, this is one to try. Zinfandels are smooth and lower in tannins, and Ridge is all organic, uses native yeasts and no modern additives, and lists all their ingredients on the bottle, which they're not legally required to do. They're just proud of the product they make, calling it "pre-industrial winemaking." The Lytton Springs this year received 94-98 points across the board, landing it near the top of the list. Consisting of 76% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignan, 2% Alicante Bouchet, and 1% Mataro, "deeply structured and full of tension, this polished red displays a distinctive personality, offering bold blackberry flavors accented with savory anise, black pepper and dark Asian spices. Ends with big but refined tannins." Good minerality and acidity with a long finish, this would be a fantastic Thanksgiving or holiday bottle. And to get #3 for under $100 is crazy, but even crazier is that this one is only $59.99.

Wine PickĀ šŸ„‚

My pick this week is our "house bottle" for Thanksgiving, the Michel-Schlumberger 2023 Pinot Noir from California. We tried this a few weeks ago and decided to load up on it as our choice for your Thanksgiving table, largely because it drinks really well at the affordable price of $14.99. Michel-Schlumberger also happens to come to us from Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma. It was founded in 1979 but Jean-Jacques Michel, a Swiss native who scoured California for the perfect land to make wine. In 1991 he was joined by Jacques Pierre Schlumberger, a native Alsatian from a family with 400 years of winemaking experience. This 2023 Pinot Noir is 100% estate fruit, "classic in style with notes of cherry cola, baking spice, and tart wild strawberry," light with a dry finish. A good pairing with turkey and all the other fixings. It also happens to be $25 online, so it's a bargain to boot.

Oysters 🦪

Lots of oysters this week to serve your holiday needs. Alongside the Thatch Islands and Chebooktooks, we also have North Shore Golds and Wild Malpeques. The Wild Malpeques are of course from Malpeque Bay in Prince Edward Island, hand-harvested and larger in size with a moderately briny, clean, and crisp flavor. The North Shore Golds come from New London Bay, PEI, and they are plump with a stronger brine and a sweet finish. If you would like some of these oysters to-go, either in the shell or shucked for an oyster stuffing, give us a call.

Final ThoughtsĀ šŸ’¬

I don't know how we made it through last week, I really don't. Last Thursday was undoubtedly our busiest Beaujolais Day on record, and though we are all ghosts of our former selves now, I am grateful. Grateful to have this business and for the community it serves, grateful for the dedicated employees who keep it running, and grateful for all of you who keep us in business. It's not always easy, but it's always worth it. Well, almost always...

Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
