NewsĀ šŸ—ž

Our belated Second Saturday -- AKA Third Saturday -- is taking place this weekend with a unique food special, Hillbilly Porchetta Sandwiches. What is Hillbilly Porchetta? Whatever Dan and Dave want it to be. No, this is simply a twist on traditional Italian Porchetta, which is one of Italy's most famous dishes. It translates to "little pig" and sometimes it refers to a whole roasted pig, but more commonly it means a sandwich with a pork loin roasted inside of a pork belly. Well, our Hillbilly version will have a very special Pork Sausage made by Dave which will include pork loin, Andouille, and spices, wrapped with the Pork Belly, then smoked and roasted. It will go on a Toasted Italian Bun with Arugula, Tomato, and Truffle Mayo made with real Italian truffle, served with a side of Chips. It should be one of the juiciest, most flavorful things we've ever had here. I made one of these when I was in Italy this year, and I could not wait to come back and make it for you. And we're not stopping there... Cannoli for dessert. A classic version stuffed with Mascarpone Cream and Chocolate Chips, Pistachios and a Cherry to top it off. Sound good? Don't answer. I know it does.

Wine FeatureĀ āļø

A traditional Italian Pinot Noir... I mean, just look at her. She's a beauty. Italo Cescon 2023 Pinot Nero, $22.99. This winery was started almost 70 years ago by -- you guessed it -- a guy named Italo Cescon, and it's still family-owned and managed to this day. This bottle is from the winery's longest-running line of wines, marked by a small cutting of grape vine tied to the neck of the bottle, a reminder of their foundation as a business and as a family. It is 100% Pinot Noir grown organically in the Veneto in Northeast Italy. Pinot Noir can be a very expressive grape, so it's always interesting to try one from somewhere different to compare and contrast to what you're used to. In this bottle, you'll find a fresh wine with notes of dates, mushrooms, cherries, citrus, and some spice and herbs, medium-bodied with a sweet/sour/savory balance going on. According to the winemaker, it's excellent with blue cheese, game, a good Bolognese, or roasted white meat... Porchetta, anyone?

Wine PickĀ šŸ„‚

We were finally able to get our hands on a new Field Recordings wine, Field Recordings 2024 Shucks. Winemaker Andrew Jones is known for handpicking incredible vineyard sites, and this one is a doozy. This is a white blend from California's prestigious Chalone AVA, home of the oldest vines on the Central Coast. This area has a unique terroir, with a combination of granite soils from the shifting San Andreas fault and limestone soils from an ancient sea bed, plus extreme temperatures and winds from the Monterey Bay, all working together to create bright, mineral-driven wines full of flavor... including the #3 Chardonnay from the famous Judgment of Paris in 1976. So that's pedigree right there. It consists of 65% Pinot Blanc and 35% Melon de Bourgogne, all from a single vineyard where growers accidentally planted Melon thinking it was Pinot Blanc, then partially replaced with actual Pinot Blanc. It's made in classic Field Recordings style with organic grapes, native yeasts, and no additives. "Rich and textured with a crisp acidic back bone, this wine is rippling with layers of white flower, brioche, lemon meringue pie, and citrus fruit. As the name suggests, this wine is killer with fresh oysters, but will also pair well with roast poultry and cured meats." A fantastic, unique product for $23.99.

Oysters 🦪

We are back to classic Pink Moons this week, fresh in from Prince Edward Island. On the smaller side, they are our favorite cocktail oyster. Briny and creamy with a sweet, mineral finish... they may look small, but they pack a punch.

Final ThoughtsĀ šŸ’¬

Word on the street is that tariffs for the EU are going up to 30% on August 1. These tariffs are not supposed to affect anything already on the water or sitting in port in the US, but a lot of importers are not willing to take the risk even now... so at the very least, expect some delays for wines from Italy, France, Spain, and beyond. I mean, I've never seen such a shortage of Champagne as I'm seeing right now. While 10% has been doable for many, we have been guaranteed by some of our smaller import partners that 30% will put them under. So, unless something changes last minute again, we might have to start working on some contingency plans... stay tuned.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
