Store News…

We had fun last Saturday at our Hopslam event and hope all of you did too. Small gatherings like that are both safe and fun and just maybe we’ll start coming up with a few more events like that real soon. However, it won’t be chili again for quite awhile…

Wine News

Slowly but surely were seeing some new wines and bringing them in for you to try. Closeouts and post offs are also beginning to appear. Every year, about this time, producers are shipping out new vintages to distributors and distributors are allowed to then drop prices significantly in order to make room for the new incoming vintage. This is, in my opinion, a great opportunity to get some fantastic deals on wines and this week we’ve got another for you! **Just in…we received another shipment of the Ruffino boxes today!!! So if you missed out or want another, we have them here for you.

Dan’s Feature

Boomtown from Dusted Valley Syrah is my feature for this week. The winemaker’s notes describe as follows, “Washington State Syrah has it going on. The Boomtown Syrah has classic notes of blueberry, juicy black raspberry along with subtle hints of herbs de Provence. To sum it up; new world fruit meets old world complexity”. James Suckling adds to not only 91pts but reflects on this $18.99 delicious treat from Columbia Valley as being, “a really delicious Syrah with grilled meat, dark berries and hints of walnuts on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied with soft tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Balanced. 96% Syrah and 4% Petite Sirah”. I mean, I think you all know I love Syrah and when tasting this bottle, I had no choice but to bring it in… dark, rich full bodied and ready for that chair in front of the fire. Of course that is if you have a safe and proper place to have that fire…

Dan’s Pick

I mean who doesn’t want a great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the same bottle, duh! This is a wine that normally retails for $29.99 and we have it for less than half price and trust me I researched this thoroughly to make sure I wasn’t falling for “something too good to be true”. Brick and Mortar Vin Rubis “was created for fun, and so that we’d have something delicious to drink the year after harvest. Made from 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Chardonnay grapes; half the harvest is made into a white wine, while the other a light red”. The 2017 Vin Rubis (red) is the one we’ve brought in “and is tastiest served with a chill right out of the fridge, and has all those boisterous rhubarb, cherry and hard spice notes you love about Pinot Noir but with the lingering vibrant core of a dry white wine. Vin Rubis is our favorite wine for the table, whether it’s lunch, brunch or on a picnic blanket”! I would not suggest a picnic it’s just to damn cold… I would, however, urge you to grab a few for yourself and enjoy this unique blend. It will never be $12.99 again.

Food News

**Fresh Mahi-Mahi in today! $15.99 a pound!

The colder it gets the more I look for those hearty but simple warming recipes to have at home. Usually it’s very simple, pasta! Easy to prepare, hearty and perfect for a cold winter night. Whereas we always have plenty of pasta and sauces down here, we’ve brought some new ones in to share with you. Make sure and check out the new 1932 Pomodorina and Barolo wine sauce and a new special pasta from Maurizio, Spaghetti Alla Chitarra. We’re also trying out a new fresh/frozen pasta this week from Pasta Bacchini… their Pappardelle will be our first foray into this new product as well as my feature for the week.

Food Feature of the Week

I’m thinking fresh pappardelle covered in a Cacio E Pepe sauce with fresh Scottish Salmon. I mean how can that be a bad thing? The pappardelle will cook in no time (3 minutes), the cacio e pepe will take no time in the same pot you cooked the pasta in, the salmon need only be in the oven 15 mins or so, removed and cut into fork size pieces. Simply add to the sauce with the papparedelle, toss lightly and you’ve got dinner. Maybe a few Haricot Vert on the side with a warm loaf of Pane’d’casa and you’ve got a great dinner!

Final Thoughts

Yeah, I know I’m supposed to be taking a step back and believe me I have a bit but honestly there’s nowhere to go and hey…it’s January so it’s not like there’s any outside work for me to do. It’s not that I can’t turn things over, because I can. It’s more so about taking care of people. Trust me, there’s some hard decisions to make these days. It’s not getting a whole bunch safer out there yet and I’m a worrier from way back. So I’m still here because I want to take care of those who take care of me. My time will come…

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
