News 🗞

Well I ate and drank my way through Italy and, as usual, came home inspired. I have lots of ideas of things I'd like to try here... first and foremost, roasting a whole pig. I practiced it in Italy, don't worry (see below photo... that's not me, if you were wondering). However, it might take some more time to figure out how to do that here... and to convince Chelsea that it's a good idea. So before that, Caprese Salads! After two weeks of pasta and fried seafood, a salad sounds pretty darn fantastic to me. We've got Tennessee Tomatoes and our own batch of Basil and some Liizi Mozzarella that we'll drizzle with a little Olive Oil and finish with some sweet Balsamic Glaze. Can't go wrong. Stop by on Friday and get your fill. And then make sure to get Huhn in June on your calendar for next weekend, June 8!

Wine Feature ⭐️

This week's feature is Murdoch Hill 2021 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir from South Australia. We tasted this wine recently and really enjoyed it. Murdoch Hill has been family-owned since 1939, but they only planted vines about 25 years ago. They've made a lot of progress in that span. They focus on high altitude and colder climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, and they are great value for money, with this bottle sitting at $29.99. They farm organically, use native yeasts and gentle extraction, and really try to let the natural quality of the grapes come through. This Pinot has notes of "light raspberry, ripe strawberry, cherry, soft, fleshy, and sweet spices. Fruity, hints of plum and strawberry, hints of vanilla, and a lingering finish." It has a little bit of an edge to it as well, which adds some interest. It's well-balanced, weighty but not too heavy, a fantastic summer red.

Wine Pick 🥂

Gotta go with a nice, crisp rosé this week: Château des Demoiselles 2023 Côtes de Provence Rosé. This wine comes to us from the Esclans Valley in Provence, home to such famed rosés as Whispering Angel and the $100 Garrus. From right down the street, this $19.99 bottle "epitomizes just how good a French rosé should be: fragrant, juicy, fresh, and crisp. A beautiful, brilliant, pale pink color in the glass, the Demoiselles blend bursts with red berries, flowers, and stone fruit, and finishes with the crisp energy that defines Provence rosé." The estate's name makes reference to the "Demoiselles of Provence," the daughters of the last Count of Provence who all went on to become queens, as well as owner Aurélie Bertin who has been working to make the vineyard organic, sustainable, and biodiverse. If you like a rosé that is dry and bright and undeniably Provençal, give this one a try. I think you'll like it as much as we do.

Food Feature 🥩

We have our Fresh Wagyu Hanger Steaks back in, 2 for $29.99. If you've never had a hanger steak before, you should try it. Also called a hanging tenderloin or an onglet, it's the second best cut of beef after filet mignon, and there is only one per cow. "Hanger steak is much less talked about than filet mignon, but it's surprisingly similar in texture. Filet mignon is well-known for being tender to the point of requiring minimal chewing to enjoy each bite. But, hanger steak is in a close second place for that melt-in-your-mouth tenderness." And for those of you that have been waiting... and there are quite a few of you... Wagyu Beef Dogs are back as well, 5 for $12.99.

Oyster Feature 🦪

Pink Moons again. We can't get enough of them. They're just beautiful and the perfect oyster, in our opinion. They are medium-size oysters from PEI, taste-wise the perfect balance of creamy, salty, and mineral, and though they aren't enormous, they have very plump flesh. Size and flavor are perfect any way you would choose to eat them.

Final Thoughts 💬

It was good to be on vacation, but as usual, it's even better to be home. I'm looking foward to a summer full of fun items and events, and I will of course be trying to figure out how to get some of the things I enjoyed in Italy over here to the States to share with all of you. I look forward to seeing all of you again soon.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
