Wine News

We’re doing our best down here to bring in as much product as we can to protect against that which may or may not come our way. The hallway coolers are packed full and I’ve begun returning to our rear coolers to lay down those special bottles again. Remember, as always let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll do our best to get it for you.

Dan’s Feature & Pick

We’re choosing them together this week and Nickel & Nickel Vineyards are our choices. I mean, why not it’s like a matched set. Nickel & Nickel produce single-vineyard, 100% varietal wine which has given them the reputation for dynamic, interesting, nuanced Napa Valley Cabernets and Chardonnays. Every one of their wines is the pure expression of its particular vineyard. No two vineyards are alike. No two Nickel & Nickel wines are alike. And the discrete and expertly-tended vineyards that make up Nickel & Nickel assure devoted wine lovers of a singular and extraordinary wine experience every time. So in keeping with that, we’ve chosen their 2019 Nickel & Nickel Truchard Vineyard Chardonnay and the 2018 Nickel & Nickel Bear Track Vineyard Cabernet as our two wines to feature this week. Both of these wines are standouts in their varietals, the heritage behind these bottles runs deep. Born out of Far Niente which flourished before prohibition and subsequently after prohibition under the guidance of new owner Gil Nickel. Today, his name adorns these featured wines. Truchard Chardonnay comes from the Carneros region and is described aptly as having, “aromas of tropical fruits, nutmeg and stone whet the appetite for the pear, ripe pineapple, fig, spice box and enticing minerality that is to come. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy, enhanced even further by the toasty oak. This is single-vineyard Chardonnay in its finest form. And you won’t want to miss it”. Bear Track Cabernet is one that we just recently brought in and is described in this manner, “Napa Valley, California - Bear Track Vineyard Cabernet's wild violet aromas, offers waves of dark fruit, and firm yet supple tannins for your enjoyment. This wine is perfumed with elegant rose petal, blueberry, blackberry and black cassis notes”. Sure, they’re not cheap but they are a fantastic pair of wines for any up coming holiday dinners, Truchard Chardonnay goes out at $54.99 and Bear Track Vineyard Cabernet at $104.99 both great wines that are sure to please.

Food News

We’re always bringing in new food items, be they on our entry shelves, cooler or freezer. There’s always something new down here for you to check out. We’ll make you a deal, we’ll keep finding new items to entice you with if you keep coming in to shop each week. Best items we can find at the best prices we can source, hope to see you soon.

Food Feature of the Week

We brought in a new fish this week to try out and a new line of oysters. The new fish is Stargazer from New Zealand and the oysters are “Gold Label” from PEI. Stargazer flesh is firm, succulent and pearly white, with a low oil content. It is suited to baking; barbeques; poaching; steaming; use in a soup/chowder; or frying. This versatile white fish is good for any way you want to prepare it and just maybe will become your new favorite. Our new oysters look great, large in size and good no matter how you want them. We’ve both had them on the half shell and Rockefeller and these gems are a meal. We’re looking forward to sharing these two new seafoods with you this last weekend of seafood month.

Final Thought

When I look at the calendar I’m amazed at where we are now… I had a sales rep ask me today if I carried a particular wine last year for the holiday and my truthful answer, beats me! Much of this past year is still a blur but we’re still doing what we enjoy, spending copious amounts of hours researching new wines, new beers and of course all of the new great foods we bring in each week. Hope to see you soon to try out some of our new items!

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
