News 🗞

It seems like the weather has finally taken its final turn towards Fall. Although with the way things go around here, I wouldn't bet on it. The leaves are turning, the winds have picked up, and clouds are rolling in. To make it a little easier on you, we decided to have a cozy and comforting food special this Saturday: Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup! A much-missed classic here at the Wine Merchant. Buttery, crispy artisan bread with... well honestly, I haven't decided which cheeses I'll use yet, but it will be some melty goodness, served with a cup of Tomato Basil Bisque. Serving all day Saturday while supplies last. It'll make a great lunch before Trick or Treat starts at 6, don't you think? Aside from that, we've just been busy sorting through all the holiday offerings to select from this year. If you have any specific requests for holiday beers or specialty items for gifts or stocking stuffers, please let us know sooner rather than later.

Wine Feature ⭐️

A new blend from Washington State this week, City Limits 2022 The Citizen Red Blend out of Columbia Valley. This is a big, juicy, jammy red blend for those of you who like that kind of thing… which I think is most of you. Comprised of 50% Zinfandel, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Syrah and aged in a mixture of French oak, American oak, and stainless steel, this blend got 90 points from Suckling who said, “This is a rich and full-bodied red blend showing notes of grilled herbs, mocha and roasted plums. Fleshy and warming, with medium-firm tannins.” The winemaker — who hails from the Midwest — says it is a combination of grandma’s blackberry jam and grandpa’s sweet tobacco for the palate. I’ll be damned if that doesn’t sound comforting, and even more so at $24.99. Not to mention a portion of proceeds from this wine goes to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), so your dollar goes even further. Try it with lamb or a curry for a great pairing.

Wine Pick 🥂

A new offering from our good friend Mary Taylor, the Mary Taylor 2023 Castilla y León. We love Mary and consider her the queen of quality, affordable French wines. She’s got a sixth sense for finding skilled winemakers with great terroir but not much reach, and then taking their wines to the big leagues. This one is by winemaker Pedro Gonzalez Mittelbrunn and is a little red grape you’ve probably never heard of… Prieto Picudo. Anyone? Don’t worry, we hadn’t heard of it either. It’s apparently a near-lost Spanish varietal that Mr. Middelbrunn, a professor of oenology at the University of León, is working hard to revive. He’s even earned the nickname of Pedro Prieto Picudo. Planted and organically farmed in the high desert in Northwestern Spain and aged exclusively in stainless steel, it’s a medium-to-full-bodied red bursting with spicy black cherry notes, black tea, and botanicals. The higher acid level leads it to pair well with rich dishes like creamy polenta, stews, or anything with caramelized onions. And at $13.99, it’s a steal, so don’t be afraid to try it. You can even cellar it to firm up those tannins and have an entirely new wine in a few years.

Oyster Selection 🦪

Two delicious options this week, Acadian Pearls and East Beach Blondes. Acadian Pearls hail from New Brunswick, medium in size and medium in salinity. "Nicely plump, crunchy but relatively lean, giving a slightly iodized and sweet flavor reminiscent of the best Mediterranean clams." Pair these with a glass of Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc. East Beach Blondes come from the great State of Rhode Island, also medium in size but much saltier. A full, sweet brine with a deeply mineral finish, perfect with a glass of something bubbly... our favorite.

Final Thoughts 💬

I don't know how many of you attended the Halloween Parade this past Tuesday. The weather wasn't exactly... favorable. Hopefully this Saturday is better circumstances for Findlay's Trick or Treat. Best of luck, and if you need some adult beverages to help you through it, you know where to go...

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
