News 🗞
Things never slow down, do they? We've got a jam-packed weekend down here, starting with the Art Walk on Friday night. Downtown Findlay will be bustling with artists, open shops, and specials... including us, of course. The bar will be open late until 9pm, and in the store we will have a Friday Night Wine Tasting from 5-7pm. As usual, four wines for $20, and I think we picked a fun selection for you all to try this time around. Then all weekend we will be featuring a Food Special, a Roasted Pork Loin Sandwich. You'll get a crusty ciabatta roll with brined & roasted pork loin, a mustard aioli, sauerkraut, caramelized onion, gruyère, and arugula with a side of chips for $13.99. It's truly a delicious flavor combination. All that said and done... I think it's time for another vacation.
Wine Feature ⭐️
We're going all Spain this week for both the Feature and the Pick, with the Feature being Mas Doix 2021 Les Crestes Priorat. If you've never had a Priorat, consider it Spain's answer to a Rhône red. Just over the Pyrenees from France in Northeast Spain, Priorat is a small but mighty wine region just south of Barcelona. It has a unique microclimate and soil that makes it perfect for red wine, and like the Rhône, it specializes in blends. This bottle from Mas Doix is 80% Grenache, 10% Carignan, and 10% Syrah. Concentrated and expressive, with flavors of plum, dark berries, dried herbs, chocolate, and anise, its full body expresses the character of the region well. It is a young Priorat, fruity and juicy but with well-balanced acidity and toned, smooth tannins that will develop even more with some aging. A sip of this is a taste of the Mediterranean, and it can be yours for $34.99.
Wine Pick 🥂
For our Spanish Pick, we have Muga 2023 Rioja Blanco. While known for its big reds, the Rioja region of north-central Spain also does some nice, mellow white wines, much like this one. Comprised of Viura, Garnacha Blanca, and Malvasia and lightly aged in French Oak (interestingly enough, the barrels were made in-house by their own master cooper), this wine "proves a complex wine with aniseed and citrus notes, such as lemon and lemon cake, a touch of white blossom and even some vanilla nuances. On the palate the crisp acidity is well balanced by the volume. This is a complex wine in which the citrus and floral notes reappear, together with stone fruit and a very long finish." This $19.99 bottle is the perfect pairing for poultry, fish, rice dishes, and much more... or just a cold glass on a hot day.
Food Features 🐟🥩
Last week we had Fresh Halibut, but this week... it's just the cheeks. Fresh Halibut Cheeks are in my opinion a delicacy. Since they are a more passive part of the fish, they are very tender in texture and have a flavor more similar to scallops than a the actual halibut fillet. Being so delicate, they're best cooked just to medium rare with a nice sear. "Pacific halibut cheeks are the sweetest, most tender cut of this beloved species of Alaskan fish. Because there are only two cheeks per catch, this cut is typically reserved for the fishers who haul in this harvest." Well thanks to some generous fishermen who gave up their portion, we have these cheeks in for you for $21.99/lb. And if that's not fishy enough for you, tomorrow we will be getting in Fresh Bluefin Tuna, $25.99/lb. This is a beautiful fish, folks, a party fish. The one you see sushi masters cutting up for sashimi, but with its steak-like texture, you can grill it, bake, sear it, whatever you want. I actually can't believe we're getting this in fresh. Then, for the more serious carnivores out there, I got a great deal on some Frozen Filet Mignon: two 6oz cuts for $18.99. Need I say more?

Final Thoughts 💬
I don't know if you've been watching the Olympics at all, but there has been some really good stuff over this past week. United States is in first place in the medal count, and host country (and the land of my people) France is in second. Couldn't be going better, if you ask me. Even though I am not an athlete -- at least until competitive drinking is added as a sport -- It is always nice to see dreams realized and the world coming together... at least for a few weeks.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
