Wine News

There’s always something coming up short in the beverage industry, while we’re well stocked in wine and beer we can’t seem to get ahold of any of the On The Rocks Cocktails. We always enjoy finding and bringing in new libations but when you find one that everyone likes and we’re unable to keep it on the shelves it’s frustrating. Sooner or later it will hit the docks and hopefully be back on our shelves soon.

Dan’s Feature

My feature this week is a varietal/wine, Barolo the pinnacle of the Nebbiolo varietal. Why Barolo? simple, Barolo is considered the King of Italian wine and most certainly this is a great choice for Dad this Fathers Day. This big Italian red is the usual accompaniment to Bistecca alla Fiorentina a massive cut of Porterhouse, this wine screams for beef. Would I enjoy this wine by itself, I would feel like I had committed a sin, it needs to be opened up early, allow to breathe (about the time it takes to prepare and cook your steak) and then sit back, taste a bit of the wine, cut into that steak and enjoy Fathers Day! We carry two different bottles, the first Reverdito 2016 for $27.99 which is for Dad, the second is Paolo Scavino 2017 Bric Del Fiasc and this $96.99 bottle is for your Father. While we don’t always have access to a Chianina 3lb Porterhouse steaks we still have something in the cooler or to cut that will work almost as well.

Dan’s Pick

Bellula 2020 Rose’ is my pick for this week, this Southern France Languedoc wine hits all the buttons on what a Rose’ should be. Comprised of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache means a firm backbone provided by the Syrah and tempered with a more fruit forward Grenache, the balance is perfect. Rich and flavorful gives way to bright and fresh notes of herbs and berries. While this $11.99 bottle will pair perfectly to lighter fare I’m certain it would pair perfectly with fish or fowl and even something with a little spice. Give it a try for yourself, it’s what you’re looking for this weekend.

Food News

We brought in both fresh fillet of Sole and Arctic Char this week and we couldn’t be happier. In fact when they came in we cooked up both fish for lunch and couldn’t have been happier or more full than you can imagine. Arctic Char is a cross between Salmon and Trout creating a leaner and delicious fillet! The Fillet of Sole with brown butter, capers and lemon was to die for, delicate, sweet flavor that makes for an elegant presentation. We’ve got the lemons, capers and of course the fish, just ask us for the simplest of directions on cooking and make sure you’ve got the butter because this is a summer dinner that needs to be enjoyed.

Food Feature of the Week

The feature this week has to be our 28oz Tomahawks and of course our 20oz Porterhouse, sure their frozen but I brought them in fresh because they both were at great, great price points of wanted to make sure that we could have these great cuts at an affordable price for this special weekend.

Final Thought

Hopefully you’re getting together with your Fathers this Sunday, if not, like myself set aside a little time to remember yours. I was told by some here that Mothers Day you go out to dinner and on Fathers Day you cook out. Well, we’ve got the celebratory fare here for you. No matter what your plans, Happy Fathers Day to all!

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
