WINE NEWS…
Copious amounts of Champagne ordered for the Holidays are now in and a handful of new soon to-be favorites and a couple of old friends!
Dan’s Wine Feature
B. Leighton 2016 “Gratitude” is not only back in stock, but it’s my feature again as well. This renowned wine maker who is best known for his efforts working with the Charles Smith “K” selections produces some spectacular wines under his own label, and Gratitude is our latest to share with you. Gratitude is from Olsen Brothers Vineyards and this 2016 is a Bandol-style blend of 70% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache and 5% Syrah. Gratitude wafts from the glass with fragrant aromas of red and black fruit, orange rind, aromatic bark and candied violets. On the palate, it’s medium- bodied, supple and velvety, with lovely juicy acids and a complex, savory core of ripe fruit. The finish is long and with notes of perfume. If you’re looking for a great bottle under fifty this is a wine I know you’ll enjoy.
Dan’s Pick
Obsidian Ridge 2017 Estate Cabernet is this week’s feature coming from, of course, Obsidian Ridge high up on the Mayacamas Mountains, “planted 2,600 feet high on the Mayacamas range north of Napa Valley, Obsidian ridge Vineyards grows mountain fruit. The steep slopes at this altitude are reddened by iron rich volcanic soils and littered with black shards of obsidian. Here in the Red Hills of Lake county the distinctive soils and mountain climate grow varietally vibrant and powerfully structured Cabernet Sauvignon”. It’s all true…for $29.99 you can pick up a great bottle of a 90+ Cabernet that has been aged in Hungarian Oak and sourced from Mountain fruit.
Food News
Prime Strip Steaks, Tomahawk Kurobuta pork chops & Fresh Savage Blonde Oysters from Prince Edward Island. That’s what I want for dinner.
Food Feature of the Week
Kurobota pork was described to me by a chef as being the “Prime” of the pork world. This is old world pork, pork the way pork used to taste. What’s that mean…well, buy a few chops and find out. Described as the best pork in the world these chops will be a true treat and at this price a bargain.
