Store News

With May almost gone, we’re sneaking up on two upcoming events for the store. On June 4th we’re hosting an event that I have always wanted to do, Roasted Prime rib off the grill served as a sandwich and served alongside fresh Tennessee tomatoes and thick slices of mozzarella in a Caprese salad. I mean, how could that not be a great, great combination? Later in the month, we’ll do our annual “Huhn in June '22” This you’ll need reservations for. Grilled 12-14oz airline chicken breasts served with our house made orzo salad and we’ll finish it all up with strawberry short cake. Needless to say we’ll have plenty of wine to choose from. How much? $19.99 per person. Winner, winner chicken dinner Saturday, June 25th.

Wine News

26 that’s right, twenty six different 2021 Rose’s adorn our racks. Did I get carried away…I don’t think so. Let’s be serious this is a yearly release. Take a look at my food feature it’s a once a year phenomenon, so the same thing with wine. When you can buy it you do because there will never be anymore 2021 Rose’s… they're here for a year and gone. Big reds and big whites can always be blended out with previous vintages to keep a particular wine the same year after year but Rose’ not so much. They produce wines that are distinctly unique for the year they are vented, always changing, always different, always unique. That’s what keeps me buying them.

Dan’s Feature

My feature is the 2021 Dans le Vide from Jolie Laide. No, I’m not paying homage to myself, Dans le Vide translates to “In the Void” (maybe it is in reference to me…) This special blend is comprised of 45% Trousseau Noir, 30% Cabernet Pfeffer, 20% Valdiguié and 5% Gamay.

The wine maker describes this blend as "Trousseau Noir & Cab Pfeffer display similar yet different attributes to this blend. Cab Pfeffer is a super rare and historical variety that was mistakenly thought to be Trousseau but DNA testing proves it is actually a unique variety called Mourtaou hailing from France. Similar in their light color and weight, these two wines can easily be differentiated by the distinctive fresh black pepper and rose hip aromas of the Cabernet Pfeffer. The Valdiguié adds laser beam acidity while Gamay contributes striking bright red-fruited notes. All components fermented separately, partially carbonic for brightness and all whole cluster adding to the complex spice aromas." Jolie Laide is a unique one man show and pretty much everything he produces makes a brief appearance in the market and then its gone. Rarely do you see another vintage, it’s one and done and then on to another project. If you want to weigh in on this one, pick one up soon… at $39.99 they won’t last long.

Dan’s Pick

Domaine Corne-Loup 2021 “Tavel” Rose’ is my pick for this week. Corne Loup Tavel represents the pinnacle of the rose' pyramid quality wise that can be achieved in the Southern Rhone. The town of Tavel has been famous for its rose’ wine since the time of the Pope’s in Avignon (1300's). This wine is produced from a blend of Grenache, Cinsualt, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Carignan and comes from a famous sub-parcel called the Plateau de Vallongue. I can remember quite well 45 years ago on the evening of May 29th I had my first bottle of Tavel. Why do I remember it…for many reasons but since that day I have always been a Tavel fan and try to have one on that date and this year will be no exception. Like Bandol, Tavel is a special region one that produces an exceptional age worthy rose’. This delicious French wine elegant, refreshing, food-friendly and very versatile. Corne-Loup offers mouth-watering aromas of strawberry and berry pie and will please anyone not just Rose’ drinkers but anyone who enjoys wine! And, at $21.99 it’s certainly worth the try.

Food News

The big question is, what are you cooking this weekend? We’ve got only the best for your grill this holiday weekend, be it Wagyu Burgers, Bratwurst, Prime Ribeyes, Kobe Strip Steaks or fresh wild caught California King Salmon. I have a full tank of gas and I’m firing up the grill because I’m cooking any or all of these things this weekend.

Food Feature

It’s started… the spring Salmon catch both in California, Washington and Alaska. How long it will last will be determined by the catch limit set by Fish and Wildlife Administration. All I know is Copper River will not make it here for awhile and the cost is going to be exorbitant. This week, however, I was lucky to get my hands on 15 pounds of wild caught California King Salmon at $29.99 a pound. I’m not making much off of this, it’s the first of the season and certainly isn’t cheap…but hey this is a remarkable fish with a remarkable taste.

Final Thoughts

Those of my generation don’t find it very difficult to remember someone we knew who lost their life in service. Equally as memorable are those who my grandfather had fought with sharing stories with me on their losses. My father as well shared many stories of friends and comrades who would never return. It was three generations of remembrance in my household; Grandfather, Father and Son as we all cared for and knew those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Sure I’m going to have a great Memorial Day, but at the same time I’ll spend a few moments remembering why I have the ability to enjoy this day as I choose. To all of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice we thank you for all that you have provided.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
