WINE NEWS…

We have a few new wines here for you this week and the first one is coming up next….read on,

Dan’s Wine Feature

Pax Mission 2019 Is this weeks feature, Pax Vineyards were established in 2000 by Pax and Pamela Mahle, Pax their focus has been on Syrah and Gamay Noir from cool, coastal sites, as well as a selection of esoteric varieties that showcase the great diversity of California wine and this weeks pick comes from that esoteric area. Mission as a varietal is one that we have never had in the store. Mission grapes as a varietal were introduced from Spain to the western coasts of North and South America by Catholic New World and is said to be the oldest European varietal. This original old world varietal was discovered on properties they drew fruit from, with vines the size of tree trunks and sometimes six feet or taller they have painstakingly brought back these 120 year old vines to produce an old world wine that we all can once again enjoy. Wine maker notes describe this new/very old wine as “Savory and spicy on the nose this light red adds copious floral and fruity notes on the palate that mix with hints of pepper and umami to make for a deliciously quaffable red that has just enough crunchy tannin to keep everything in check. Delicious with tacos or tikka masala, Burgers or Bahn Mis, this light red is just about perfect with everything we’ve paired it with to date”. Why not… this is the first original varietal to be cultivated in Europe and only now do we have an opportunity to have a taste for ourselves.

Dan’s Pick

This week’s pick is Luca Laborde 2018 Double Select Syrah from the Uco Valley Mendoza, Argentina. “Luca Winery, the Argentine winery famed for producing fine wines in partnership with small family growers, has released its Luca "Laborde Double Select," produced from Argentina's first double massal selection Syrah vineyard. What’s Double Massal, “Selection Massale (aka Massal Selection) is a French wine growing term for the practice of replanting new vineyards with cuttings from exceptional old vines from the same (or nearby) property. Massal Selection is what they call the “old way” of propagating vineyards that’s been replaced with vine clone nurseries”. I really like the back-story on this wine and it’s production but what I really like most is this $19.99 Syrah from a great producer, making fantastic Syrah at a very, very fair price.

Final Thought

There may be a lot of confusion, doubt, worry and turmoil these days but one thing remains constant and that is what resides in all of us regarding the love, compassion and concern we share for family and friends. Sitting down with these people place life back in context, to share a great meal, a great bottle of wine is a respite from life outside us. Remember the important things and stay focused on that which brings all of us joy and be thankful for that which we do have.

Please, please continue safe practices and please bring a mask when you come visit us at the store.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
