Wine News

While there are still shortages on many wines, we’ve still been able to locate a few new ones and they’re at opposite ends of the spectrum in price. One came in at $10.99 and another at $119.99. We’re keeping an eye on both ends…

Dan’s Feature

My feature this week is a new product from Daou Vineyards, Bodyguard Red Blend. This 90+ Paso Robles blend of 51% Petit Verdot and 49% Petite Sirah is a great value at $37.99. Daou has always been a big player down here and we’re pretty excited to be debuting this new wine. Tasting notes describe this wine as having, “fragrant fruit aromas of blackberry, raspberry, currant and crème de cassis. Notes of cocoa, coffee, dark chocolate, licorice and sweet pipe tobacco are rounded out with whispers of truffle, toffee, mocha and menthol. A juicy, fleshy palate offers bright, generous flavors of cherry, cranberry, strawberry and blueberry accented with black raspberry and tamarind—all supported by underlying accents of dusty leather, pencil shavings, cigar box and crushed herbs. An elegantly styled and beautifully structured finish reverberates with focused energy, vibrant berry fruit and ripe, polished tannins”. I’m pretty sure a thesaurus was used in writing those notes but I’ll just say that there is nothing I’ve had from Daou that I’ve ever been disappointed with and this bottle is certainly no exception.

Dan’s Pick

Columbelle Red Blend from the Gascogne region of France is this week’s pick. We’ve carried Columbelle Colombard/Sauvignon Blanc since early this Spring and we had never tried their red blend until last week and guess what, it’s a winner as well! Priced at a whopping $10.99 and featuring a blend of Merlot and Tannat makes this not only interesting but tasty as well. Described quite aptly as a, “Fantastic value under $13 on this Merlot and Malbec red wine blend from Côtes De Gascogne, Southwest France. Plaimont Colombelle 2018 is full-bodied with fresh dark cherry, red currant, dark berries and cracked pepper spice flavours on the palate”. This bottle is a classic “cheap and cheerful” selection. Anything off the grill, or in a square cardboard box will accompany this wine perfectly!!!

Food News

Keeping an eye out for price changes in beef and seafood is a constant occurrence of my day. Wine prices fluctuate seasonally, but food prices are different. Demand, availability and, of course, processing and shipping contribute to the prices of fresh products that you and I want to get a great deal on. Needless to say it keeps me busy.

Food Feature of the Week

One of our primary purveyors began to direct ship Scottish Salmon and this is no ordinary Salmon. This is the Salmon that was served for Prince William and Kate’s wedding dinner. It has been served on the tables of Thomas Keller’s restaurants and Gordon Ramsay as well. I rarely stand back and exclaim my love for a piece of fish, but when this fish became the same price as our old standard from Nova Scotia, I had to make the switch. We brought in 23lbs between Tuesday and today and we’ll run out by tomorrow afternoon. This is a new Salmon that I’m sure you’ll appreciate. We’ll keep it coming in fresh each and every Tuesday and Thursday.

Final Thought

September is always a month full of memories. For 30 years, it was back to school and this week begins 15 years since we took possession of The Wine Merchant. I first had payroll taxes taken from my check when I was 13 years old, so that pretty much means I’ve been employed in some manner or fashion for going on 55 years and you know what… I’m tired. I know what you’re saying, “how hard can it be with the employees you have and the fact that you can drink all day”. Anyone making that comment obviously has never owned their own business. So, on this year’s anniversary, I’m just letting you know that as of January the 2nd, I’ll be taking a half step back. Will I still be at the store, you bet. But, the day to day decisions will be passed on to Chelsea. Chelsea will become me, Kim will become Chelsea and Kelly and others, will just continue doing what they do so well. Me…well I’m still coming down most days because, hey where else can I drink for free…

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
