News 🗞

Do you think the longest day of the year will also be the hottest day of the year? I've said it before and will say it again... we will have the climate of Florida someday. Come beat the heat with us this weekend with a couple of food specials that we selected to cool you down. First, Shrimp Cocktails. We've had some requests for this, and now is finally the time. Large, chilled Oishii Shrimp with a housemade cold and tangy cocktail sauce and fresh lemon for $11.99. Can't go wrong there. And since the fish ceviche went over so well the last couple of times, we decided to do it again with the Oishii Shrimp, marinated in fresh citrus juice and tossed with onion, cilantro, peppers, cucumber, and tomatoes, served with tortilla chips for $14.99. And what should accompany these dishes? Frozen Piña Coladas, of course! Pinapple juice, coconut cream, and rum, topped with even more rum and fresh pineapple. It's sweet, it's creamy, it's tangy... you won't be able to drink just one.

Wine Feature ⭐

We brought back in a wine I haven't had in a long while, Terre Rouge 2014 Garrigue. Terre Rouge is located in the Sierra Foothills, on the far eastern edge of California about an hour south of Lake Tahoe, making them the highest elevated wines in the state. Unlike the rest of California, these vines are influenced by the mountains, not the ocean. Winemaker Bill Easton is one of the original RhĂŽne Rangers, a group of winemakers focused on growing RhĂŽne varietals (think Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, etc.). We love the RhĂŽne Rangers around here. He does it right in terms of growing sustainably and organically, being true to the grapes and the land. This bottle, awarded 92 points by Wine Enthusiast, is a blend of 66% Syrah and 34% Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter of which makes this wine extremely special because "aside from rare exceptions, there really is no such thing as 'old vine Cabernet Sauvignon' in California." This is one of those rare exceptions. On the palate, this "eminently quaffable" wine is "earthy, smoky and black peppery in a very good way, as it reveals funky nuances from the potent aromas through flavors that are also ripe and full of black-fruit notes, to the lingering spicy finish." Don't be put off by the 10-year age of this wine -- that is Bill's thing, and they are released at the perfect time to drink while still retaining the capability to age even longer. Come grab a bottle of this for just $21.99.

Wine PickÂ đŸ„‚

Hugues Beaulieu 2023 Picpoul de Pinet is the pick of the week. Vinepair calls this the best wine to drink with seafood, so clearly it is the choice for this week. Known as "the Muscadet of the South" in France, this is to the Mediterranean coast of France what Albariño is to northwest Spain... the default wine for fresh shellfish & seafood! This wine consists of 100% Picpoul (or Piquepoul) - a very popular, traditional local variety planted on sun-drenched hillsides called "costiÚres" near the Mediterranean coast filled with wild herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and sage. "This medium-bodied wine offers gusty aromas of grapefruit, honeysuckle and pear with lime zest and tropical nuances. On the palate, a tart acidity mingles with crisp green apple, lemon, a hint of white peach and a pleasant minerality on the finish. A pure expression of the grape varietal, the wine shows how good Picpoul can be when grown on its favorite terroir." A fantastic value at just $12.99, this wine is refreshing and ready for summer.

Food FeaturesÂ đŸ€ đŸ„©

Well obviously we have to talk about shrimp... You know we love our Oishii Shrimp, and we just have in 2lb bags for $39.99. "Oishii shrimp are harvested through dedicated small-batch farming methods. Proprietary pond construction, cutting-edge farming techniques and strict water quality monitoring allows us to produce a quality of shrimp that is second to none." They are sustainably sourced to the highest level of aquaculture standards and are free from artificial preservatives, added hormones, phosphates, and antibiotics. They are shell-on but with split shells so that they peel very easily, and it takes almost no time to cook them. The large size makes them good for grilling (who doesn't love a shrimp that you can skewer?), but cook them any way that sounds good to you. We also got in a very special cut of beef this week... USDA Prime Teres Major Beef Steaks. The story goes that in the 90s, the price of filet went up astronomically, and a few chefs in the Twin Cities started serving Teres Major steaks instead, and no one noticed the difference. They're just that good. The teres major muscle is a lean cut of beef from the chuck section of a cow. It's located right below the front leg and is mostly known only by skilled butchers. It's the most tender cut after ribeyes and tenderloins, but it has much more flabor than a tenderloin due to being a more heavily used muscle with more bloodflow. We already have them trimmed out and ready to go for you at $18.99/lb. Simply salt and pepper, cook, and then allow to rest a bit before serving.

Oyster Feature đŸŠȘ

Pink Moons and Acadian Pearls this week. Pink Moons, our current favorite and basically house oyster at this point, are a little smaller but the absolute perfect balanced flavor. Acadian Pearls are bigger and a little bit sweeter. Both are nice and salty staples of ours from PEI. Can't go wrong either way.

Final Thoughts 💬

It's only fitting that the peak of summer really feels like summer, you know? For me, it's hot but not TOO hot to get outside and grill. Many of you may (and do) disagree with me, but hey, I know where my priorities lie. Like I said, if you're looking to cool off, you know where to go. Cool drinks, cool food, and an A/C that is functioning... at least for now, knock on wood. Now I'm off to peel more shrimp...

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
