Wine News

Up until a few years ago, sales reps would crowd the space and offer up copious amounts of wine to sample. Plus, they would host grand shows with hundreds of wines to try…Not so much the case these days. Sometimes, we’re lucky to see a sales rep and if they have wine, most of the time it’s mass marketed and not something we would consider bringing into the store. These days, it’s reading, searching, talking to customers and trying to get product in that’s first of all great (at both price and quality) and something we can stand behind. We’ve been around long enough to know who the import company is, the producers and sometimes the specific piece of ground those grapes are coming from. We may not be bringing in as much new these days, but we’re bringing in that which we wish to share with all of you.

Dan’s Feature

Gorman Brothers 2019 “Devil Makes Three” is this week’s feature. I’ve always enjoyed these Columbia Valley gems! The Gorman brothers have a great grasp on how to handle big reds. Here’s how others describe this wine, “Gorman does it again with a robust, elegant and brag-worthy wine. It's a Cabernet (but just a touch of Malbec to set it apart.) Notes of cassis, Rainer cherries, pipe tobacco and salted caramel…the hint of cocoa dusted strawberries on the finish will keep you going back for more”! I really enjoy big expressive reds from this region and whereas I would love to have these in the store all year long, this wine is another example of when it’s gone it’s gone! So stop in soon and pick up this beautiful $29.99 Cabernet!

Dan's Pick

My pick for this week is a Dry Riesling from Herman J. Weimer Seneca Lake AVA of the Finger Lakes. This $16.99 stunner is a crisp white wine that’s often overlooked by many. Riesling many times gets a bad rap, but sometimes it’s exciting to try something different and this is my suggestion this week for you. Fresh, light, crisp and racy, this Riesling allows for the fruit to shine without the heavy residual sugars. Have it as an aperitif or accompanying any thing…Riesling is the most versatile wine there is and when asked by someone what pairs best with a hot dog (yes, they have asked that question) I always go to Riesling. Give it a shot you just may be surprised.

Food News

Ribeyes and Strips are through the roof this week; Teres Major and Coulotte however are stable and fantastic. Every time I prepare these steaks, I’m always impressed and pleased with their quality. This week, the Teres Major came in to us from Niman Ranch and the Coulotte due in tomorrow will most likely be Prime. These products are unbelievable, usually only available here and will go quickly…come get them!

Food Feature of the Week

Final Thought

Fall is most likely my favorite season … changes in weather to me means changes in food and wines. Be it tailgating, Oktoberfest celebrations or simply friends and families gathering but…please, please, stay safe. Unfortunately, today we recognized a customer’s name in the obituaries and once again it saddens us that yet again we’ve lost a friend. These are still times in which we need to be judicious, vigilant, careful and as always…safe! We look forward to seeing you soon…

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
