Store News
We’ll be a little more in order starting tomorrow afternoon and hopefully from here on out things will get easier. Sometimes there’s a few rough patches in the road but you seem to get by and that’s what we’ve had to do in the past and that’s what we’ll do each and every time. Thanks for understanding.
Wine News🍷
I must be thinking about Italy 🤷♂️, apparently I only purchased Italian wines this week. Whatcha gonna do? We haven’t had a Gran Selezione in house in awhile and I thought we needed one as well Orvieto has been absent for a long while as well. Gran Selezione is the pinnacle of Chianti, the best of the best identified by the growers of that region, Orvieto is a simple Italian white wine that just wants an empty glass and maybe a snack or two. When it comes to the other two purchases I decided to up our position in quality Barolos and few do it better than Paolo Scavino. Sure, maybe it’s Bastille Day but I’m dreaming of Italy and sometimes things like this just happen.
Dan’s Feature
My feature this week is from Paolo Scavino an historical winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto from Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate. He started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was 10 years old. A young winemaker who inherited the passion and devotion for the land he belongs to. Through over 60 years of experience his focus has been to invest on important cru of Nebbiolo to show the uniqueness of each terroir. This single vineyard 2018 Paolo Scavino Prapo while priced at $72.99 is brilliant, rich ruby with light garnet rim. Very compact and intense nose, notes of mulberries, ripe wild raspberries and some licorice. Shows itself quite nervous at the palate, grippy, easily drying tannin, then a firm drive and finish. This is a bottle to open early and enjoy a few hours later or to cellar and hold, either way accompanied with a great cut of beef you’ll realize why Barolo is the King of Italian wine.
Dan’s Pick
The pick for this week is Le Campuget Rose’ this delightful little Southern Rhone Rose’ is a great deal and steal at $8.99 plus it goes great with todays Pissaladiere! This obviously is one of the great deal wines we brought in last week. Le Campuget Syrah Grenache Rosé is a fresh, vibrant dry summer pink from the Costieres de Nimes area of France's southern Rhone. It shows delicious crunchy red fruit aromas with a hint of minerality; the palate is lively, full of fresh fruits and balanced by a refreshing acidity. When you can get a wine like this for $8.99 you usually use the phrase “I’ll take two please”, their white blend from last week as my pick and their summer weight red are both back in stock as well.
Food News😋
“Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in”…one of my favorite lines in movie history. No, I’m not out or being pulled back in I’m referring to the extended availability of Copper River Salmon, just when I thought they were out they pulled some more back in! 🎣 This of course isn’t a problem at all, I love having this fish available as long as possible. After checking out the harvest reports we see it definitely decreasing. The biggest harvest day was July 4 and catches have been declining rapidly. With the season really coming to a close very soon this may be your last chance this year for this delectable fish. Priced just a bit higher than our Scottish Salmon at 20.99 it’s a steal, this being the lowest priced this season. Stop in and pick some up before it’s gone.
Food Feature of the Week 🥩
Sure I love the beef and pork that we carry but what amazes me the most is our Fresh Fish and Oysters. Every week I’m amazed at how quickly these products are brought to market making them the freshest and best priced seafood products anywhere in town. I never imagined myself as a fish monger but with product this fresh and that good I’ll be more than happy to identify myself as such. So yes, my food features this week are Loch Duart Scottish Salmon, fresh (never frozen) Halibut, and of course the Copper River Salmon.

Final Thoughts
While we’ve said goodbye to a few down here we will also be saying hello to a few as well. Oceana while not a new employee is joining us full time. She was a welcome addition as a part time employee but now we’re very excited to welcome her in a full time position. She’s knowledgeable in foods, wines and beer which makes this a perfect spot. We hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather we have before us and as always we hope to see you real soon.
Cheers from all of us & of course Viva La France!
