Wine News

It’s hit or miss on inventory these days, it’s in stock or the distributor is waiting on a container. Each and every day we’re diligently trying to figure out what’s in and of course the inevitable what’s out. We’ll keep our eyes out for those bargains, new wines, (which there are a few this week) and of course your old favorites.

Dan’s Feature

Seghesio Estate Home Ranch 2018 Zinfandel is my feature for this week. If you’re a Zinfandel drinker this 90+ wine should be your go to for this week. This wine is what Seghesio is all about, established in 1895, Seghesio Family Vineyards produces benchmark Zinfandels that honor five generations of wine growing leadership, and share the heart of Sonoma County. Seghesio Family Vineyards encompasses more than 300 acres of estate vineyards in the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys – that also represent a significant amount of Old Vine plantings that are more than 50 years old and up to 125 years old. With a passionate belief that wine is made in the vineyard, Seghesio Family Vineyards pairs more than a century’s worth of experience in the vineyard with labor-intensive farming techniques that reduce yields, increase quality and ensure wines of outstanding purity and balance. True to the winery’s heritage, Seghesio Family Vineyards is focused mainly on Zinfandel. Winemakers notes describe this wine as follows, “intense aromatics of currant and plum are complemented by savory notes of black olive, anise and allspice. A bright entry of black raspberry gives way to a bold palate of supple, lively tannins and a powerful, lingering finish. This wine pairs best with rich and meaty short ribs, braised pork belly, or gnocchi gorgonzola. Or as in my case a big empty glass, We only got in a few of these bottles and at $59.99 you can understand why, but if Zins are your drink, then this bottle is what you’ve been waiting for.

Dan’s Pick

My pick for this week is Joseph Drouhin 2019 Drouhin-Vaudon Chablis. While my choice for Chardonnays are limited to a few specific bottles, Chablis has always been my top choice. We have another fantastic bottle here but it’s a bit on the pricier side whereas Drouhin comes in at the more friendly price of $24.99. Joseph Drouhin is a renowned name in Burgandy and this his property’s in Chablis makes this a go to wine for me. Wine makers notes describe this wine as, “a dry and fruity wine, that’s easy to drink. Its color is pale gold with greenish hues. Very fresh aromas reminiscent of citrus (lemon or grapefruit); small pleasant touches of fern or coriander are found as well. On the palate, dry and fruity, with mineral notes with a pleasant and long aftertaste”. Nationally priced much higher than your cost here this 92 point brisk, bright and delightful example of Chardonnay is sure to please.

Food News

Not sure what happened last week with the oysters, bringing in 200 was a gamble I felt, but hey what’s the worst thing that can happen we have to eat 150… Needless to say we weren’t able to eat anything close to that number because between 4pm last Thursday and 6pm last Friday (that’s 10 business hours) we had already sold 182 Oysters, the last 18 were gone before 11am Saturday. Was I a bit surprised..yes, was I happy, you bet because each and everyone of you told us how delicious they were. So for this week, 200 more Duxburys and Summer Love oysters available on the half shell or Rockefeller style! I mean what’s the worst thing that could happen…

Food Feature of the Week

Halibut is my feature for this week, the price finally came down. While this has always been a favorite for many the price was not so agreeable but this week we were able to bring it in at $19.99 a pound. This is FRESH Canadian caught Halibut delivered today. While only getting in five or six pounds call or come in quick because as you know it won’t last long.

Final Thought

If you haven’t noticed our signs are back up on the doors, please wear a mask when entering if you have not been vaccinated. Continuing with our due diligence we may as well be masked the next time you see us, remember an 187ml of prevention is still worth a 750ml of cure, I think you get what I mean. We’re going to remain safe down here and we wish that for all of you as well. Hope to see you soon.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
