News 🗞
It's an early newsletter this week because (drumroll)... Beaujolais Nouveau is tomorrow, 11/20! I hope you have your calendars marked because this is always a very special day here at the Wine Merchant. Not only will we have Beaujolais Nouveau flights, we have a variety of food specials on the docket, including my Beef Bourguignon. The flavors have been melding together for days, and it's just about perfect. Tender beef simmered in red wine and rich stock until it melts in your mouth with carrots, pearl onions, mushrooms, and herbs de provence, served over a piece of crusty baguette. It's a classic French dish and so packed full of delicious flavor. We'll start serving as soon as I can get it warmed up. Also on the docket are Pissaladière, a flatbread packed with umami from anchovies, black olives, and caramelized onions, Baked Brie with toasted baguette and jam, and French Macarons. I guarantee you will not leave here hungry or disappointed. And of course we will have Wine Flights of the 8 different Beaujolais Nouveau wines that we have coming in, plus 20+ cases of the wine in the store that you can shop for your holiday table, as a gift, or simply for yourself. Then because I am a glutton for punishment... Soup Saturday continues this week on 11/22 with Beef & Vegetable Soup. This is a recipe based off of a soup I had at the now-defunct Brass Lantern restaurant in Gatlinburg, TN. Not too light, not too heavy, a tiny bit of heat... just a really comforting bowl of soup. Reminds me of the good ol' days.
Wine Features/Picks ⭐️
Why, Beaujolais Nouveau of course!!!!! Last year we ordered every wine we could get our hands on... we pre-order them months ahead and don't receive them until a day or two beforehand, sometimes even day-of. In France, it's actually illegal to open a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau early. So last year we ordered it all, and this year we narrowed down to what we thought were the best 9 bottles: Domaine de Trois Vallons, Château d'Ouilly, Michel Tête, Domaine de la Madone, Paul Durdilly, and four George DuBœufs. One rosé, one orange, and 7 reds. The reds will all be similar but with mild differences. Some will be a bit drier, some will be a bit bolder, some will be a bit softer -- and this is why it's nice to try them first -- but all of them will be light-bodied, bursting with red fruit flavors like cherry and strawberry, and with little to no tannins. They don't undergo any oak aging, so they are fresh and fruity and way too easy to drink. Made with the Gamay grape in the Beaujolais region of France, which is the southern-most part of Burgundy, the grapes are harvested in September, undergo two months of carbonic maceration where they ferment into wine, and then it's bottled and shipped out to us and to expectant drinkers all around the world. These come out only once a year, so now's your chance to grab them. Last year we sold out within a week, so time it wisely...

Oysters 🦪
This week we have Chebooktook oysters from Bouctouche Bay, New Brunswick. The name means "great little harbor" in the original Micmac language. I'm not sure we've had these before... if so, it's been a while. These are medium in both size and salinity, balanced and very smooth with a sweet finish. We also got in some Thatch Islands from Barnstable, MA, which are a bit bigger and saltier with a limestone finish.
Food Feature 🐗
We happened to have a private dinner for a wonderful customer last week that was Spanish in theme, so we had to order in some extra special items... and of course we had to get some for ourselves too because, well, it's Ibérico Pork, the most renowned pork in the world. These pigs probably live better lives than us. These items come from heritage pigs in Spain that are protected by law, and they roam freely feeding on acorns, which creates incredible marbling, a rich flavor, and a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture. They also happen to be healthier than traditional pork with healthy fats similar to those found in olive oil. We have three options and not many of them, so take a peek soon...

Final Thoughts 💬
One week until Thanksgiving... how that can be, I do not know. We've got several items on order for many of you, including the fresh Bowman Landes turkeys, which came in early and are ready for pickup anytime starting on Thursday. If you've ordered, just stop on in or give us a call. If you need wine or anything else for the holiday... you know where to find us.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
