Good food, good wine, good times... we've got it all this weekend.

Hours of Operation

Monday - Tuesday, 10am to 6pm

Wednesday - Saturday, 10am to 8pm

Calendar 🗓

February 29 (TODAY) - It's Leap Day! To celebrate, we're bringing back an old favorite of the masses... Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup.

March 1 (Friday) - Friday night charity wine tasting (Clothe a Child), 5-7pm. We'll also have a food special at the bar, BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos, so plan to stay for the evening!

March 9 (Saturday) - Second Saturday... details TBD.

April 8 (Monday) - LUNAR ECLIPSE!!!!! 🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔 We will be open late until 8pm on this auspicious Monday with special seating, drink specials, food specials, everything we can think of, and believe you me... we've been thinking about it for a while.

News 🗞

We've got two events for you this week, one today and one tomorrow. If you have time this afternoon/evening, stop on down for one of our classic Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup combos. You may remember this from Thursday evenings in our pre-COVID days --- this is the same thing but amped up a notch, made with a couple of big slices of Detroit Sourdough. And then tomorrow, a Friday Night Wine Tasting! I know you're excited about this one. Four different wines on offer with proceeds going to charity (Clothe-a-Child)... and who knows, maybe you'll find a new favorite wine. It's a great way to give back and to try something new, so stop on by anytime between 5 and 7pm. We'll have some BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos at the bar for when you're done tasting. In other news... Easter is not far down the road. We will be ordering Hams from our friends at Smoking Goose in Indianapolis this year. This boneless ham is pasture-raised, cured for 30 days in Cardinal Spirits' Lake House Rum plus ginger, lime, star anise, pineapple, and mint syrup, smoked over cherry wood, fully cooked and ready to eat. It's available as a half ham (4.5-5.5lb) for $75 or a whole ham (9.5-10.5lb) for $135. Let us know by March 18 if you want to be eating this around your Easter table.

Wine Feature ⭐️

The feature this week is a red blend that hails from South Africa: Opstal Carl Everson 2020 Cape Blend. South Africa has been making wine since the 1600s, with each year bringing them more finesse and acclaim. Opstal Estate in Slanghoek has been making wine themselves for almost as long... they are a 7th-generation family-run estate. "Carl Everson was the visionary 4th generation farmer at Opstal Estate. This wine is a tribute to his perseverance and hard work, earthed in our family’s land, during tough times in the industry post-war. Made from the best and carefully selected grapes on the farm, this is our flagship red wine." Comprised of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Pinotage, 26% Carignan, and 9% Cinsault, this $29.99 blend "shows lovely black current, cherry, mulberry and pepper spice aromas on the nose with a nuttiness from the barrel maturation. The structure of this wine is medium bodied, with the Carignan and Cinsault providing an elegantly fresh and zippy palate, finishing dry." This is a really enjoyable, full-bodied red, so if you haven't had a South African wine before, this is the one to try.

Wine Pick 🥂

We have a new Chardonnay in the house for the first time in a while, so of course that is my pick for this week. Knights Bridge 2021 Chardonnay comes to us from the Knights Valley AVA in Sonoma. According to Wine Enthusiast, who gave this wine 94 points, "this smooth and silky wine emphasizes delicious apple and pear flavors, keeping the buttery, oaky notes in the background for a complex and harmonious effect. Granny Smith apples and Bosc pears meet mild vanilla, toast and almond flavors that linger through the finish." It also has some peach and mild floral notes, and "finishes with a crisp mineral note of fresh sea breeze, inviting a second sip." I'm not exactly sure what a fresh sea breeze tastes like, but it sounds pretty good to me. Pick this one up at $29.99 -- a bargain when it's priced at $40 on their website!

Food Feature 🍝

This week we're thinking of an easy meal to go: Pasta, Pasta Sauce, and Bread. We have a few options for you to choose from, but my suggestion would be our Maurizio Casarecce Pasta with 1932 Arrabbiata Pasta Sauce for a little bit of spice, and a Tribeca Bakery Asiago Loaf. We also have some Rinaldi Italian Sausage if you'd like throw that on there. The pasta and sauce are both made in Italy from quality ingredients, and you can tell. The bread is from Tribeca Bakery in New York City... we serve their Rosemary loaf at the bar so you may have had that before, but this time I would give the Asiago a try. Super quick and easy for a Friday night meal... after coming home from some drinks at the Wine Merchant, of course!

Oyster Feature 🦪

Shipwreck Oysters from PEI this week. These little guys are from the eastern point of Prince Edward Island, where the rough waters led many ships to their doom in prior centuries, hence the name. "The tides have formed Canada's most spectacular sandy dune beaches but also one of Canada's most prized oysters. Only Shipwreck Selects can survive in these dangerously good waters." They are larger with deep cups, sweet grass notes, and a great salinity. These oysters are so good, I had to order an extra shipment because I just know you're going to love them. They did NOT come in this green color, but man it would have been cool if they did...

Final Thoughts 💬

The last Leap Day we had back in 2020, COVID was just starting. I find that a little hard to comprehend, don't you? It's been a long four years with many highs and many more lows, but we've come a long way. I'm grateful to all of you who have stuck with us through it all, and I can't wait to see where we are when the next Leap Day rolls around.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
