National Rose’ day is only three days away! Thank God, we have 26 to choose from…

I just saw that this is this Saturday. I feel bad I’ve been celebrating it for the past 6 weeks 🤷‍♂️

Hours of Operation

Monday – Saturday

10am to 6pm

Calendar

June 25 - 🐔 HUHN in JUNE - Reservation are now being taken for this annual event! We’ll be serving our best Huhn plate and sipping on some great wines for this annual cook. Call in your reservation for this 5-7pm event that’s coming sooner than you think! (only a few spots remaining)

July 9 - Saturday special BBLT 🥓🥓 🍅 (I just bought 30lbs of slab bacon)…and Gazpacho! Chelsea makes an unctuous Gazpacho and I’ll come up with some double bacon possibilities and the fresh home grown tomatoes. Something to look forward to and you don’t need reservations because we’ll be serving them all day long.

July 14 - It’s Bastille Day, Pissaladière all day long!

Store News

While the stock market awaits the key inflation rate, we’re slowly beginning to see impacts in wine and food prices. Knowing that newer vintage releases will begin to raise wine prices, we’re beginning to see it in the hidden charges and fees that we pay. Fuel surcharges and environmental charges are now appearing on invoices. We all know that these charges are here to stay and aren’t going away. We do our best, in both provisions and beverages, to get you the best possible products at the best possible prices. We’re holding steady in our prices for now and hope that you continue to avail yourself of all of our services.

Wine News

Five years ago much of my week was spent tasting wines that distributors wanted to bring into the market. It wasn’t unreasonable to taste 20 or 30 different wines over a three day period and to choose from those the best which we wanted to market. These days, it’s a big week when you taste 10. Many sales reps are no longer on commission and their incentive to move new products is greatly reduced. What drives our selection these days is a combination of occasionally tasting new wines with sales reps, research of wines that we have conducted and searched out and maybe the biggest is those bottles you come in and ask for. You’ve become the taster and even with misspelled, mispronounced names and sketchy descriptions we usually track them down and on many occasions they become a staple to the store. One way or another, we are constantly finding new wines to share with you.

Dan’s Feature

Domaine J.L. Chave 2019 Hermitage will be my feature…I received my allocation this week and it wasn’t pretty. These wines go for anywhere between $275.00 and $350.00 a bottle give or take. I have them going back to maybe 2013. Why do I continue to buy these bottles? Because they are the best representation of Syrah in the world and it’s the only bottle that I can guarantee for over twenty years. I personally have three held back, one for each of my grandchildren’s birth years (that cost me a grand). If you were married or have birth years in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019 you need to act quickly because once these are gone they’re gone and I have precious few of each. These bottles will last 50 years, they’re not going to go bad and will only truly appreciate in value. I was spot on in buying them for my grandchildren, for a time in the future that most likely I will not to be able to enjoy with them, but I’m pretty sure that they’ll remember me for what I set aside for them so many years ago.

Dan’s Pick

Campuget 1753 2020 Viognier is my pick for this week. We’ve carried Campuget for quite some time, most always there Rose. This is probably the first time we’ve carried their Viognier. As a varietal that many are not familiar with, Viognier is a full-bodied white wine with a lush, soft character. In contrast to say a Chardonnay, Viognier has more natural aromatics which include notes of peach, pears, violets and minerality. The 2020 from this producer offers a bouquet of honeysuckle, apricot, orange marmalade and tropical fruits. On the palate the balance and roundness are very pleasant. Medium-bodied, generously fruity but structured, it owes its freshness and precision to the happy acidity. There’s nothing wrong with a good Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, but sometimes it’s exciting to try something different, new and this would be just that bottle. Priced at $19.99 it’s a perfect price point for such a bottle. Give it a try as an aperitif, a first course or as a wine to have with lighter fare such as chicken or pork… you just might be surprised.

Food News

You’ve got 10 days till Father’s Day 2022. If you’re interested in our 34oz Dry Aged Wagyu Tomahawks, you have until next Tuesday to place your order. If $115.99 steak isn’t in the cards, we’ll be cutting beautiful Prime Cowboy Ribeyes at $22.99 a pound. Either way, we have the best steaks, chops and seafood to help you celebrate and…Oh yeah, we can pick out a couple great bottles of wine or beers to top this celebration off. Psssstttttt…I believe my purveyor made and error this week and sent me Wagyu rather than the Prime Dry Aged cuts. If you’re looking for something decadent we have it at a great price!

Food Feature 🐠

I’m going to repeat myself this week… It’s got to be the Wild Copper River Sockeye Salmon! This is some of the best on earth. These brightly colored ruby red fish have a buttery texture and decadent flavor second to none. Still at $25.99, it was only available for Thursday this week making this a flown in, super fresh fish brought in to us within 36 hours from catch. Fifteen pounds of this delicious creature will be available by the time you get today’s newsletter!

Final Thoughts

Apparently, there’s always a reason to celebrate! After searching for a June 9th celebration, I decided to look further into the week and June 12th looked oh so much better to put in the newsletter. If you’re ever in need of a reason to celebrate, stop in because I’ve always got a few handy. Me, well it’s just another day and I’m celebrating them all from now on out🍾.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
