News 🗞

Well, we're finally doing it. After I want to say years of toying with the idea of lobster rolls, shopping for affordable and quality lobster meat, experimenting with styles and cooking methods and flavors... it's finally time. Lobster Rolls this Saturday only for our Second Saturday special. A buttered and toasted split-top bun, a thin layer of mayonnaise, a crisp leaf of lettuce, and then finally of course a boatload of garlicky, buttery lobster... a whole lobster tail, and even more lobster on top of that. Is it a Maine-style roll? Not quite. Is it a Connecticut-style roll? Not quite. It's a Merchant Roll, not heavy and creamy, but rather light and fresh and full of flavor. Supplies are limited, but I'm hoping we have plenty. Now seeing as it's already Second Saturday, that means Oktoberfest will be here in the blink of an eye. We have a few spots remaining for our Oktoberfest Dinner... and it might be our best one yet. We've been slaving away over the menu this week, and let me tell you, it's going to be quite the feast. Get out of the house and let us treat you to some delicious German fare, or if you're enjoying the downtown festivities, come and take a restful breather here with us. Give us a call or shoot over an email... looking forward to hearing from you.

Wine Feature ⭐️

This week, we have Château Fourcas Hosten 2019 Listrac-Médoc Bordeaux, a big and classic Bordeaux red blend from, of course, France. Chateau Fourcas Hosten is a wine estate located in the heart of the Médoc, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Founded in 1810 but with winemaking history dating back to the 14th century, the property was acquired in 2006 by two brothers, Renaud and Laurent Mommeja, who make their wines with biodynamic (and soon, organic) methods. Consisting of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc, "the Fourcas-Hosten 2019 has a deep, rich, concentrated colour with aromas of blackberry jam and redcurrant. Full-bodied structure with soft, coated tannins. Intense finish, with balance and freshness." Heavy rains in the summer of 2019 also add an elegance that other vintages lack, making this bottle a little bit special. From one of the most prestigious Cru-Classés in Haut-Médoc, with one of Bordeaux's most esteemed winemakers behind the helm, and with 90+ points across the board, this is a solid choice priced at $39.99.

Wine Pick 🥂

Going with Escudo Rojo 2023 Gran Reserva Chardonnay this week, $18.99 a bottle. I think we're all a little more familiar with Chilean reds, so I wanted to speak to the whites. This is another Baron Philippe de Rothschild wine from Casablanca Valley in Chile. He searched the world to find the terroir he wanted and found in there, with the strong influence from the Pacific, well-draining soils, and a mild climate. All together you get exceptional Chardonnays with power and finesse, crafted in the Burgundian style... he was French, after all. "On the palate, this wine offers a rich and full-bodied experience, showcasing the intense flavors of tropical fruits such as pineapple and passion fruit. The round and dense mid-palate presents a delightful medley of toasted almond, mild spices like cumin and cinnamon, and tropical fruit flavors, culminating in a gracefully long finish accented by notes of toasted hazelnut, mild spice, and pineapple." If you like an elegantly oaked Chard, I suggest you skip California for a week and give this one a go.

Oyster Selection 🦪

Pink Moons and Irish Points are this week's offerings. Both 2.5-3 inches, both from PEI, and both some of the cleanest, most consistent and well-balanced oysters in the Atlantic. Pink Moons are of course salty and creamy with a mineral finish. Not far away, Irish Points are from the algae-rich waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, lending them a green hue (the shell, not the meat...). They're briny and sweet with a mineral finish. Try them both and see which of these neighbor oysters you prefer.

Final Thoughts 💬

You've surely noticed today's date, September 11. It's a day we will always remember... where we were, how we felt, the days that followed and how everything changed. I hope we can take a moment today to remember those we lost and honor the heroes who bravely entered the destruction at their own expense. Never forget.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
