News 🗞

Well, it's cold, it's rainy, and so it had to be done... the patio is kaput. The season fooled us for a while with mild temps and sunshine, but now its true colors are showing. Fall is here. Come commiserate with us on Saturday for with a food special, Fried Bologna Sandwiches. A brioche bun with fried bologna, aged provolone, giardiniera pepper relish, and sun dried tomato aioli, chips on the side. Simple and delicious. Saturday only, though, as we can't take too much with everything we have going on next week... most importantly being BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU. Wine flights and French fare, all day long. This is one of our favorite events of the year, so mark your calendars to stop down for lunch or dinner. I'll of course be making my almost-world-famous Beef Bourgogne. And finally, for our beer lovers out there, we have our list of Goose Island Bourbon County Stouts that we will be getting on Black Friday. Six varieties, and not many of most of them, so give us a call to reserve what you'd like. We're announcing it here first so that you, our most loyal customers, get first dibs.

Wine Feature ⭐️

Our feature this week is a beautiful Côtes du Rhône Syrah, the Delas 2021 Les Launes Crozes-Hermitage. Hermitage is the prime Syrah appellation of the Rhône, so really, the prime Syrah region of the world. It is a tiny place -- basically one hill with the Rhône River at the bottom. It sits squarely between the two mountain chains of France, so it has its own microclimate, but what makes it extra special is that the river over the course of time changed course, creating a truly unique soil that can grow some remarkable grapes. This bottle is the only Hermitage wine we have... well, besides J.L. Chave, which is only a little more... $300 or so more... 😬 This bottle runs a measly $31.99 in comparison. Syrah from Hermitage is like nothing else. It pours deep red in color and is fruity on the nose with notes of cassis, plums, and violets. On the palate, there is richness, earthiness, meatiness, blackberry, and more plum. It is well-rounded with integrated tannins and good acidity, so the potential for aging is there. Wine Spectator says to drink now or through 2026. It has the added bonus of being an exellent bottle for your Thanksgiving table.

Wine Pick 🥂

We have another bargain on our hands. Siduri 2022 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir -- normally $35-40 a bottle and in this week at $22.99. Man, I love finding a good deal. Siduri is named after the Babylonian goddess of wine, who you will see on the label, and they specialize in cold-climate Pinots from up and down the West Coast. In fact, they make little else. "The 2022 Siduri Willamette Valley Pinot Noir comes from vineyards in two distinctive appellations within the Willamette Valley: Yamhill-Carlton and Eola-Amity. The contrasts of marine sedimentary and volcanic soils weave together to create a wine that shows red and black fruits, clove, dried herbs and savory spices." Add on Bing cherries, dark chocolate, and nutmeg. Another holiday bottle? You bet. It has more tannic structure and a savory note that other Pinots may lack, though still maintaining a lighter body, making it great for pairing with that turkey dinner.

Food Features 🥩🍝

We have a special treat for you today... a fresh delivery from our Dry Aged Program with Buckhead. This one is aged for an extra long 45 days. I have one that I cut up today, and one that I'm saving for the holidays because it's going to be that good. Grab a cut while they're available for $29.99/lb. We also have the Wagyu Hanger Steaks and brought back in that delicious Prime Teres Major, so the cooler is full. Now, if you are a fan of our 1932 brand of pasta sauces, I have bad news. Our distributor has decided to discontinue sales of the brand. We have a few jars left of the Barolo flavor, but that's it. However, we have discovered a new brand we'd like to share with you to fill that void -- introducting Mutti! We have three varities: Arrabiata, Basil, and Parmigiano Reggiano (AKA Parmesan). They are straight out of Italy and the same price of $8.99 a jar, so give them a go and see what you think.

Oyster Selection 🦪

Oysters this week are twofold, Birch Points and Cavendish Cups. Birch Points are from Steuben, Maine. They are supposed to be the best that Maine has to offer, medium in size with a strong brine up front and a savory finish. Cavendish Cups, on the other hand, are a "top-tier" choice from PEI. "Their reputation is built on quality, flavor, and a deep connection to the environment in which they're grown... [a] bright, briny burst upfront with a seaweed linger on the palate. Plump and firm meat with a silky finish." Either way, you can't lose. We ran out of oysters last week, so hopefully we have enough to satisfy your appetites.

Final Thoughts 💬

If you follow wine news, you may or may not know that Wine Spectator's Top 10 wines of 2024 are being announced this week. We so far know numbers 2-10, and you best believe we are on the hunt. Some are just not going to happen for us, but we have secured quite a few and have high hopes of snagging even more. We're going to do everything we an to make sure you have access to the best wines of the year for your holiday gifts, your holiday consumption, or both. More to come.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
