News 🗞
A big thank you to everyone who stopped down for our Big Oyster Day last Saturday. We hope you had a great time over some great oysters. We shucked 1000 oysters in just about 6 hours... if you heard someone crying in the kitchen, it wasn't me... we might have set some kind of record though. I better contact Guinness and see. Regardless, I hope you had a great time over some great oysters. Also --- don't forget that our new Dry Aged Beef Program starts next week, and we'll have our first cuts in store. We're excited and hope you are too. They will make an absolutely delicious Valentine's Day --- or any day --- treat. If you missed me talking about that last week, you can read it here.
Wine Feature ⭐️
The feature this week is Field Recordings 2022 Wonderwall Pinot Noir. We almost always have the Field Recordings Fiction Red Blend in stock, but this Pinot Noir is a little harder to come by. We've only ever had this wine once before many years ago, back when it had Babe Ruth on the label, and we were only able to get our hands on four bottles then. We're very pleased to be able to have it back in the store for you this week because we are big fans of Field Recordings down here. Winemaker Andrew Jones is a vine fieldman, meaning he tends to vines in vineyards all across California. The owners of those vineyards in turn give him some of their fruit from the sites --- or "fields" --- of his choice, which he then turns into Field Recordings wines. He hand selects each vineyard, choosing only the most underrated sites with untapped potential. The 2022 Wonderwall Pinot Noir is from an extreme coastal location in Central California. It gives "energizing notes of black cherries, figs and cola, a touch of almond bark, smoke and black tea. Invigorating hints of white pepper, clove and cinnamon." This vegan and sustainable wine is now in the store at $24.99.
Wine Pick 🥂
Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of meeting winemaker Paul Johnson of the Fiftyrow and Smokescreen lines. Paul was trained in the business by his mentor and friend Gary Galleron of the legendary Chateau Montelena, Vineyard 29, and more. We were impressed with both him and his wines and decided to bring in a few things from both of his lines, one of them being this week's feature, Smokescreen 2020 "The Chemist" Red Blend. "The Chemist has a deep, inky purple color and aromas of berry cobbler, blackberry, and tobacco. On the palate, the Chemist is a big, bold, racy wine with tons of black fruits, tar, graphite, and a long finish with ultra fine tannins. Although powerful, it is nuances and elegant and is going to evolve gracefully." Hailing from Paso Robles and comprised of Grenache, Syrah, Mouvèdre, Petite Sirah, and Teroldego, this $23.99 bottle is well worth every penny.
Food Feature 🐟
Even though it sadly ended a little earlier than we wanted, we should celebrate the Lions' good run this season, right? So I'm featuring Buddy's Detroit-Style Pizzas. Buddy's was founded in 1946 when Gus Guerra and his team borrowed steel auto pans from local auto plants and made the country's first square pizzas. Though there are several others who now make Detroit-style pizzas, Buddy's is the original, and they still use those same pans. USA Today called Buddy’s Pizza “pilgrimage-worthy pizza” and the Daily Meal named it #6 of the 101 Best Pizzas in America. It has a thick, buttery, crispy crust that absorbs the flavor of the cheese and toppings which are placed directly on top, and it's finished off with a layer of tomato sauce. It's hearty and cheesy and delicious, and we have them here at $17.99.
Oyster Feature 🦪
After the chaos of last week, we're back to an old favorite, Pink Moons. These little beauties out of PEI are "a perfect balance of salt, creaminess, and a pleasant mineral finish" and will "seduce any oyster eater." I don't know about you, but that sounds pretty good to me. They pair well with a sparkling rosé, and we just so happen to have a nice one of those on our wine list. Come and try them out together this weekend. And surprise! We got a second oyster in this week, Raspberry Points from PEI. These oysters are a little bigger and have a subtle sweetness and a mushroom finish. Two solid choices this week --- which will you choose?

Final Thoughts 💬
As I mentioned earlier, it's been a bit of a rough January for us down here. We haven't felt the best, my vacation got cancelled, someone hit my car in the wasteland that is the Kroger parking lot, and then some. But when all is said and done, we're looking forward to brighter days in February. Literally, the sun better come out. Today is off to a good start at least. Wishing you all a great weekend and month ahead. Hope to see you soon.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
