News 🗞

I swear, all I have to do is blink and another event is upon us. This Saturday is another Second Saturday in Downtown Findlay. Continuing our food special trend, we decided to bring back the Chicken Pesto Pizzas that you all enjoyed so much last year. We pondered what would be a good Spring dish to serve, and Pesto came up the winner. This pizza will be Pesto, Shredded Chicken, Dorati Tomatoes, and Mozzarella on one of our pizza crusts. We'll also have Italian Lemon Cake for dessert. Throw in a glass of Italian wine, and you've got yourself a meal. Stop on down while supplies last. It should be a beautiful day for the patio and perusing downtown, which is much needed after all the clouds and rain this week. Additionally, if any of you celebrate Passover (which is coming up soon) and you need some kosher wine, give us a call so we can make sure to have that in for you next week.

Wine Feature ⭐️

This week I'm featuring a wine we usually only carry a single bottle of, but this past week, we got a six of them for a great deal. Normally $74.99, we have it in for you at $54.99: d'Arenberg 2018 "the Dead Arm" Shiraz. The Osborn family have been making wine at d'Arenberg since 1912; in fact, they are one of Australia's First Families of Wine. Now in its third generation, the wines at d'Arenberg are certified organic, biodynamic, and sustainably grown. They are harvested by hand and traditionally pressed... that's right, with feet. It's labor-intensive but gentle and allows precise control of the wine. This bottle, the Dead Arm, is named after a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata that randomly affects vineyards all over the world. One half, or an "arm" of the vine, slowly becomes reduced to dead wood. That side may be lifeless and brittle, but the grapes on the other side, while low yielding, display amazing intensity as all the resources are funneled to the one side. The 2018 Dead Arm "begins with dark fruits, damson plum, and lovely fennel seed twists. Rich balsamic glazed beets, roasted meats, and jus give layers of complexity unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Superb balance. Slaty, persistent, mineral-like tannins bring a generous framework for decades of cellaring. This is a wine of history and provenance. Highly collectable, The Dead Arm is considered by many to be one of the top Shiraz in Australia." We've only got six bottles of this on hand, so run, don't walk.

Wine Pick 🥂

The pick this week is one that you may have tried at our charity wine tasting last month, Parras 2019 370 Léguas Vinho Tinto. This little Portuguese red blend is more of a heavy hitter than most Portuguese reds, drinking a little fuller and finishing a little drier while still coming in as a great value at $12.99. It's from the Douro River Valley, which many of you are familiar with but may not know is one of the oldest designated wine growing regions in the world. The name, 370 Léguas, denotes the demarcation line between Portugal and Spain, where most of the grapes in this blend are from. It's made from three grape varieties from the best slopes of the region, which is a little warmer and produces some heartier grapes. "Ruby colored wine, aromas of very ripe red fruits and soft tannins reveal good ripeness of the grapes, which balanced with acidity, make this wine pleasant and balanced." A great bottle for any setting at a great price.

Food Feature 🍕

We love our Buddy's Detroit Style Pizzas, but ready or not, we've got a new pizza in store for you today. Introducing Massa Sicilian Style Pizzas coming to us from... Chicago, of all places. Here's their story: "Since the late 60s the Lollino family have been dishing up delicious authentic Italian foods… some may say it runs in our blood! It all started with Pina Lollino, Angelo’s mother, who was an Italian immigrant with Sicilian roots and a strong passion to bring the true taste of Italy to Chicago. She served the finest Italian dishes at her renowned restaurant, Ristorante Italia, for over thirty years.

About 5 years ago, Angelo was walking the freezer aisle at the grocery story and realized that there wasn’t anything special about the frozen pizzas being offered. He didn’t see anything that he would feel comfortable serving alongside Sunday dinner. Angelo knew that there was an opportunity to bring the true delicacy of his Sicilian style bakery pizza to the masses." Each pizza is handmade before freezing with quality ingredients. We have two flavors for you, the Italian Sausage and the Roasted Vegetable, both of them $14.99.

Oyster Feature 🦪

Malpeque Oysters in this week. These are the oysters that made PEI famous for its oysters when they were voted the world's tastiest oyster at a Paris exhibition back in 1900. They are traditionally-harvested wild oysters that still have a clean look and flavor. Medium in size, they have a moderate brine and clean finish and pair perfectly with a nice lager -- try the Mast Brewing Champ Lager that we have on draft. We also ordered in more of the larger, salty Princetowns that we had in last week, so you've got your options.

Final Thoughts 💬

Well, we made it through the eclipse. It was really something, wasn't it? I was amazed in a couple of different ways... First, how many people stopped in to spend the event with us, some being cherished regulars and a lot more being people we met for the very first time. That's not something that happens here that often, so it was a lot of fun. Kept us busy, that's for sure. Second, the eclipse itself was downright awesome. Several of us said that it was much more incredible than we had anticipated, and I'm sure many of you would agree. Wherever you spent the day, I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
