Wine News

Not a great deal of new wines this week, however, the ones we did get in are a couple of fantastic selections. We’ve already got a few others ordered for next week and we’ll keep searching for your new favorite.

Dan’s Feature

My feature this week is Brennon Leighton’s other project, which is his 2017 Olson Brothers vineyard Syrah. I’ve already sung praises to his blend “Gratitude” but we just got in his $49.99 Syrah, which may be my new favorite. Described quite aptly as, “a spicy, flavorful red with plums, dried earth and sweet tobacco galore. It’s full-bodied and very intense. Spicy, clove-like aftertaste”. I’m a huge Syrah fan and this bottle is the epitome of Yakima Valley Syrah and that’s a wine I’m always smitten with. You can lay this down or drink it tonight. If you enjoy a deep, dark intense wine that allows for plenty of contemplation, this wine needs to go home with you. We’re never able to bring in a lot, but we have just enough to share with you.

Dan’s Pick

My pick this week is from Mary Taylor, her 2020 Cotes de Gascogne Olivier pretty much wowed us all when we tasted it this week! And… at $11.99, I’ve officially declared this the perfect summer white. Being from the Gascogne region of France means that the usual suspects are Colombard, Gros Manseng, Uni Blanc and a bit of Sauvignon Blanc, which makes this a very delectable bottle. Described by others as: “This classic French white smells like elegant flowers. The sippin' is all about plump and round fruit, bursting acidity, lemony and buttery in an elegant way, with a vein of greenness. Some tension, but a very, very bright finish that keeps your taste buds coming back for more and more”. We’re just saying, trust us on this one. You’ll be back for more!

Food News

We’ve got plenty of new in this week, Langostinos and Monkfish for a poor man’s lobster alternative and plenty of Prime, Teres Major and Coulotte Steaks (see below) for the grill. We spend a good deal of the week searching out and bringing in great market items for a great price. Hey, it’s no difference in choosing the wines we bring in to share with you, we keep our eyes open and get the best we can at the best prices available.

Food Feature of the Week

Coulotte is my feature this week; no…not the women’s wear from years past this is a special cut of beef! The Coulotte is to Sirloin as Cap is to Ribeye, What’s that mean… It’s a beefy flavored, tender and terribly lean cut that is separated by two layers of fat on the top sirloin. If you’ve ever been to a Brazilian Steakhouse, then you’ve had this cut. Last week, I ordered in a few pounds to try out and Chelsea and I were very, very impressed. I’ll be cutting this as a Strip Steak and I think you’ll see why we brought this in. When I can buy Prime Cuts at $15.99 I buy… Come in and pick a few up and I’m sure you’ll agree with us.

Final Thought

While we’re not as fully staffed as we want to be, we now have a bit of breathing room. Maybe you’ve noticed but we are very happy to be welcoming back full time, Kim Haddix! For those of you who know Kim, you can easily recognize why we’re so excited. Additionally, we’re also excited to welcome to the staff Kelly Allen a great addition that will make things a bit less strenuous down here. Say “Hi” to both the next time you stop in…

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
