News 🗞
We're brainstorming away down here as to what to serve for our Valentine's Day Dinner... it's a month away, but it will be here in the blink of an eye. We love getting creative, but serving a four-course meal during Lent is requiring a little extra creativity... We do still have some openings for this annual event, so make sure to give us a call to reserve your spot. Speaking of Valentine's Day, we are planning to put together some meal options for you to make the preparation easier for your special day. Steaks, seafood, sides, dessert, you got it. Next month, we are also starting a Dry-Aged Program, which I will talk about in more detail next week, but those cuts of beef will start to be available as well. And as always, if you have any special foods or wines that you'd like us to order for you to gift or to simply enjoy, be thinking of those now so that we can be sure to get them in for you.
Wine Feature ⭐️
My feature this week is Luca 2019 Old Vine Malbec from the Uco Valley in Argentina, priced at $34.99. The Uco Valley is in Mendoza, the hot and dry region that produces some of the best wines in Argentina, with Malbec being its star grape. If you don't normally drink Malbec, I would say give this one a try. This wine was # 21 in the Wine Spectator Top 100 a few years ago, and they described it as having "loads of spice and black and red cherry aromas with notes of chocolate. The berry flavors really pop on the palate as the wine has both a full mid palate and lively acidity that leads to an incredibly long finish. A bottom note of freshly brewed espresso keeps the mouth watering too." James Suckling gave it 95 points and said it would be best 2024 or after with some aging in the bottle. Well guess what, it's 2024, and this wine is ready to drink.
Wine Pick 🥂
My pick for this week is a wine that we've actually had in the store for a while now, CVNE 2022 Monopole Rioja Blanco from Spain. It's a white that pleases a lot of palates but not one that most people normally look for. If you know anything about Spanish wine, you know that Rioja is renowned for its famous red, Tempranillo, but this little white is from a sub-region high in altitude and influenced by Atlantic winds and prime for more delicate wines like this. This wine is 100% Viura (another name for Macabeo, one of the grapes in Cava) and has notes of "tart pear, orchard apples, honeysuckle, orange. Stone, minerals, and tropical fruit layer on the palate with a nice weight. Crisp and clean." At only $15.99, come give this new grape a try.
Food Feature 🐟
We're still stocked up on Strips, Salmon, Cod, Pork, and Dry-Aged Ribeyes... all the meat you could dream of. If meat's not what you're looking for, however, or if you're keeping an eye out for something to munch on during Lent, we have something new in for you: Alessi Premium Risotto. When it's this cold outside, all I want to do it cozy up with a bowl of something warm and delicious. Risotto fits that bill without a doubt. Risotto is creamy and fantastic but notoriously difficult to make. Undercook, overcook, under-stir, over-stir, burn it, create mush... Why not simplify things a little and grab one of these one-pot meals from us? Give them a try and let us know what you think.
Oyster Feature 🦪
Oysters this week are Conway Royals, the premium oyster of Malpeque Bay in PEI. They are large oysters with a clean, crisp, moderate brine. What makes them interesting is that they are wild-caught using traditional hand tongs, which isn't particularly common anymore. I read that these tongs once received the nickname of "widow sticks" due to the precariousness of the work. These oysters must be worth the trouble.

Final Thoughts 💬
Thanks to everyone who stopped down for Second Saturday this past weekend, despite the weather. We really enjoyed having you here, and we hope to continue participating in this fun event in the coming months. Next month we'll have Second Saturday, Fat Tuesday, and Valentine's Day all in a 5-day span... I might be crazy after all. Yeah, we're heading towards a busy February with several events, food specials, and wine specials, so keep an eye out. You can now keep track of our events on our website, but you know me... I'm liable to come up with a genius idea the day before, so Facebook or Instagram is best. Case in point -- more deep dish pizzas this weekend! See you tomorrow.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
