Beer Tasting

This Saturday we’re starting things off with a little Wiedemann’s, no not like Grand Dad used to drink. This is a new brewery from the Southern part of the state. Number two takes us to Wisconsin to try Collective Arts Ransack the Universe a new hoppy brew with definite hints of tropical fruit. Next to that state up-North for a certain Winter Warmer, their Vanilla Java Porter. To finish Saturday’s tasting we’ll go back to Wisconsin and try Central Waters Salted Maple Stout. Should be a few new things for you to try, come down Saturday and have a beer with us!

Dan’s Feature

What would Dave Phinney’s Orin Swift The Prisoner have been like if Dave had the opportunity to create it not from a range of grapes more or less scrounged from up and down the California coastland, but instead from two great vineyards right in the heart of Napa Valley? This week’s feature is just that wine, Crane Assembly Disciples at $49.99 is a wine that you need to try.

Dave these days has very little if any connection to his old named known favorites, he’s still putting out a few great things and Disciples is certainly one of them. You don't have to wonder - because Crane Assembly Disciples is that wine. For this wine, Dave and his team source (76%) Zinfandel, (13%) Charbono, (6%) Grenache and (5%) Petite Sirah from Tofanelli Vineyard in Calistoga, Milat Vineyard in St. Helena, famed Morisoli Vineyard on the Rutherford Bench and the GB Crane Vineyard originally planted in 1885. It’s a big, bold, wine for sure, but retains a fantastic sense of balance and energy right on through the long, dry, finish. Big enough to handle bold foods, smooth enough to just sip.

If you’re a fan of Dave Phinney’s old Orin Swift collection this bottle is a must buy.

Dan’s Pick

Willamette Valley King Estate 2016 Pinot Envy Pinot Noir is my pick for this week and it’s not just because Sigmund Freud is pictured on the label or the fact that it has a catchy name. Pinot Envy is a King Estate Pinot Noir. I’ve been a fan of King Estate Pinot’s for a long while and most, if not all, can prove to be quite pricey. So when this bottle came in at $24.99 it was meant to be. This elegant, well priced, 100% Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley is well worth its price point. Tasting notes alone should draw you in, “the deep garnet hue of Willamette Valley King Estate Pinot Envy gives way to aromas of black cherry, plum, and licorice. Supple, balanced tannins accompany dark fruit flavors of blackberry and black cherry. Structured acidity imbues this wine with a long finish, highlighted by subtle clove elements”. This is no Freudian slip, pick up a bottle of this soon…

Friday/Saturday Special

Pulled Pork Pizza, a large 12” pizza covered with a layer of barbecue sauce, sliced red onion, pulled pork and finished with a healthy dose of Mozzarella cheese. Can’t beat that combo…

Final Thought

Multiple choice question for my final thought… I need a bottle of wine tonight. (A) Yes (B) A (C) B. If you answered this question correctly we’ll plan on seeing you real soon.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
