WINE NEWS…
I’m reminded of our first Christmas at the store in 2007, Patrick and I didn’t know what to expect and certainly weren’t prepared for what was to come. However we made it through the days leading up to Christmas, and on Christmas day while preparing dinner Patrick looked at me and said, “do you have any idea how many are sitting down to dinner today with wine we had suggested?” That literally terrified me. Here we are fourteen years later and now thinking about that statement I feel relatively assured that you’ll agree we’re proud of the selections we’ve helped you make.
Dan’s Wine Feature
This week’s feature is from Terrazas de los Andes, this time it’s their single vineyard 2013 Los Aromas Cabernet. This 90+ Mendoza Cabernet is always priced north of fifty dollars a bottle and we just got it in at $39.99. Winemakers notes offer us the following “Vivid garnet red. With intense and complex aromas. Its captivating spicy profile subtly integrates with fresh mushrooms and truffle aromas. Balanced notes of leather and vanilla provide complexity to this great Cabernet Sauvignon. Palate is concentrated and elegant. Reveals ripe fruit notes and a subtle mentholated flavor. Its great volume, balanced acidity and soft tannins enhance the elegance of this wine”. The pedigree of this producer is untouched in Argentina marking this as an exceptional value. While certainly able to be held this bottle is ready to go for Christmas.
Dan’s Pick
2 weeks ago this was my feature! We ran out very quickly and I couldn’t get it back. The reason I couldn’t find it…they changed the vintage to 2017 and dropped the name Las Compuertas. So my pick this week is their 2017 Single Vineyard Malbec from Argentina. This bottle, besides being one of the finest Malbecs in existence ,WAS $59.99 and is NOW $39.99! Once or twice a year the price of this Malbec falls to today’s low price and that’s when I buy. Terrazas de los Andes is under the Moet – Hennessey brand and first began in the mid 1950s experimenting with producing wines in Argentina. Forming a partnership with Cheval Blanc in the 1990s elevated this property and it’s wines to some of the best wines produced in Argentina and as one would expect their Malbec proves their commitment to this project. Tasting notes describe this lush bottle as having “aromas of a ripe fruit with sweet blackberry, plum and red fruit marmalade nuances. There are also spicy hints of pepper, bay and cinnamon. The palate is dominated by intense, ripe black fruit. There are fine ripe and silky tannins producing an elegant and complex mouth feel”. While not normally a Malbec drinker, this French inspired and crafted high altitude produced from some of the best Malbec in the world even has me enjoying it.
