News 🗞

What's this weekend?? The Super Bowl! We will be celebrating with some Pulled Pork Poutine down here on Second Saturday, but we will also have some Pig Wings in the store for you to take home and cook up on Sunday. What are pig wings, you ask? Similar to a rib but leaner and easier to prepare, they are pork shanks that are slow-cooked and fall-off-the-bone tender. Fully cooked, just add your favorite sauce... we have some ideas on that front, so just ask. You may have also seen online that we will be providing build-your-own meal kits for Valentine's Day. It's surf & turf themed but totally flexible depending on what you want to put together. We want to be a one stop shop for you to create a delicious meal for you and your partner, family, or friends. And this of course includes meats from our new Dry Aged Program!!!

Wine Feature ⭐️

We're going thematic this week --- the feature is Fess Parker 2020 The Big Easy Red Blend out of Santa Barbara County. Could there be a more perfect choice for Mardi Gras? Fess Parker is a family-owned winery that is now in its second and third generations, which we always like to see. Priced at $34.99, this blend is comprised of 52% Syrah, 28% Petite Sirah, and 20% Grenache. It'll be big and a little bit spicy, just like the Big Easy itself. Wine Enthusiast gave it 93 points and says it has "dense aromas of cassis meet with rich caramel and fudge on the ripe and deep nose of this bottling. The palate is thick and intense yet retains a big-wine balance, offering cocoa, black fruit, light herb and cracked pepper flavors." Come and grab a bottle for next Tuesday.

Wine Pick 🥂

This pick this week is going to be for what other than Valentine's Day... Biutiful Rosé Cava. Cava is the sparkling wine of Spain, made in the same traditional method as Champagne but simply in a different place and with different grapes. It's from the Requena region of Spain, a region with a grape-growing history that dates all the way back to the 7th century BCE, so they clearly know what they're doing. This rosé cava is made with 100% Garnacha grapes. It is "highly effervescent with tangy flavors and aromas of blood orange, raspberry juice and candied grapefruit." It's a wonderful option for a brunch, any kind of celebration, or just daily drinking at an easy price of $16.99. And why for Valentine's Day? Well, it's simple --- the romance! Tell someone they're "biutiful" with a bottle of Biutiful.

Food Feature 🥩

It's all about the beef this week... we have officially received the first delivery of meats from our new Dry Aged Program! I'm pretty excited about this. We got in Prime Dry Aged Tomahawks and Choice Dry Aged Strip Steaks. I will also be cutting down a Tenderloin into Chateaubriand. If you haven't heard of that, "this French word is named after 19th-century French Romantic writer, François-René de Chateaubriand, who enjoyed this cut of beef. It now translates to mean 'a very thick steak cut from the fillet of beef.' Whatever name you give this supremely tender roast, it’s an epicurean experience you won’t forget." Isn't that the most romantic thing you've ever heard?? Three great options if you choose to put together a meal for Valentine's Day, or a good way to go out on a high note if you partake in the Lenten season.

Oyster Feature 🦪

Raspberry Points again this week. These PEI oysters are from the northernmost waters that produce oysters, taking six years to reach harvest size. They are mid-size, 3-4 inches, and have a subtle sweetness and a mushroom finish. They go nicely with a glass of Riesling, so try the Dr. L at the bar or grab a bottle from the store and let us chill it for you.

Final Thoughts 💬

I'm grateful the sun's been out, but maybe more thankful that Dry January is over and business has been good the past week or two. Hoping that continues. In case you didn't see, we have an event tonight here at the Wine Merchant. Our friend Kevin Bonanno will be here to discuss some of his wines from Barone Trading Company. If you haven't heard of Barone, they are an importer that focuses solely on fine Italian wines. Kevin's got tons of knowledge to share, so come on down and enjoy his expertise while sampling his wines. We'll have both red and white flights as well as some Specialty Pizzas, Arancini, and whatever else I come up with last minute. Hope to see you tonight.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
