We’ve got the Beef!

It’s going to be a busy weekend, tomorrow’s wine tasting and then Poutine on Saturday😋

Hours of Operation

Monday – Saturday

10am to 6pm

Calendar🗓

September 8 - Friday night Anniversary Tasting, 5-7pm. That’s right, Friday night wine tasting! $25.00 for four wines, four different and delectable bites to enjoy with your wine, and a bar that’s open until 9pm serving some of your old favorites. It’s an anniversary after all (not however a statement on what’s to come).

September 9 - Second Saturday! Poutine it is, crispy fries, cheese curds, and a great gravy to complete the dish. This is our Fall favorite and while not technically Fall we’re getting a jump on the season!

September 23 - Saturday It’s Oktoberfest Findlay! (SOLD OUT)

October 14 - Second Saturday…Croque Monsieur and French Fries!!! I’ve just returned from France. What else would you expect?

Store News 🏬

Like the headline says…it’s going to be busy down here this weekend. Tomorrow night we will have Lauren Hall from Wine Trends here to help in our wine tasting. We appreciate Lauren as our rep and wanted to allow her to share some new wines with you.

Wine News🍷

With it being a holiday week there’s little new wine this week. The new ones we did get are for this Fridays wine tasting. So, I guess that’s the Wine News of the week. C’mon down and try out four new wines this Friday. $25.00 for four wines from 5-7pm.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️

This week’s feature is being poured at the bar. We’re tasting the little brother at the wine tasting, but we’re pouring it’s big brother as our glass pour. Kiona 2018 Estate Grown Cabernet from Red Mountain, Washington will be our feature. I like the description offered here, “Rich and impressively complex. This bold Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington State's Red Mountain AVA will impress you. Elegant cassis and blackberry dark fruit. This wine is smooth with stunning intensity. Cigar box and earth mingle with subtle chocolate, eucalyptus, and mint”. To be honest, I like anything that comes from this AVA. I’m pretty sure wine reps choose these bottle because they know that, but I’m good with it, bring em on…

Dan’s Pick 🥂

I felt certain I had chosen Cantina di Gambellara 2021 Pinot Grigio as my pick before, but after further scrutiny, I found that hadn’t occurred.

We’ve been hit or miss having this wine in stock and this has been a hit for this week, as we have the rack full. This $14.99 bottle comes to us from a very small importer in Cleveland. We’re trying to carry a few of his bottles. Surprisingly, I found recent tasting notes that describe this cheap and cheerful wine quite well, “Founded in 1947, the Cantina di Gambellara cooperative today has nearly 300 members. This Pinot Grigio comes from the calcareous, volcanic hills in the small Gambellara commune east of Soave. Focused and intense with a super-fragrant character, white peach, white flowers, wax and honey waft from the glass. Classy”. Not my words, I simply gravitate towards this bottle because of it’s price and the fact that it’s delicious. If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful bottle to enjoy with or without food or friends this is it!

Food News 🐟

Just like all of you I’m always looking for sales on food items, sometimes I win, and other times… not so much. Prices on great beef, pork, and fish are always changing. Following these prices and researching where the market is and is heading keeps me pretty busy. I’ve had both success and some failure this past week…but in my world, the glass is always half full.

Food Feature 🥩

Whose got the Beef?? We got the Beef!!!!

It’s not so much a feature as it is an opportunity… I had the chance to buy an over purchase from one of our food purveyors (they bought wayyyyy too much). Just in - a case of Wagyu Tenderloins with a BMS index of 6/7 - making this a very expensive, but heavenly cut of beef. With a little research, I saw these tenderloin filets going for anywhere from $40 to mid $50 range for… an eight ounce cut!! That’s the price I’m able to sell to you per pound $39.99! Thus making a whole tenderloin approximately $350 rather than $600 to $700 hundred… These whole cuts are hundreds more anywhere else, I wasn’t able to procure much but I have 3 whole, fresh, and never frozen BMS 6/7 Wagyu Tenderloins available. If you’d like one please call soon…These are for a special dinner, a dinner with beef like no other you’ve ever had!

Oyster News 🦪

We got Bella’s Summer Love back in this week. We love trying new oysters, but from the list that is available to us Summer Love continues to be the best. Always plump and delicious with shells that are easy to open allowing us to shuck faster and eat more…sorry sell more… I’m sure we’ll find another special oyster, but for now we’re sticking with the tried and true.

Final Thoughts 💬

Be careful what you wish for…Our first tasting 16 years ago was unannounced and we probably had 10 or 12 people show up. The next week we told people we were offering the event, and 40 people showed up. We rapidly reached a hundred or more… Tastings back then were $5.00 and we gave out free food. Some time later, we raised the tasting price to $10.00 and offered salami and cheese. Did the numbers drop? You bet…we had raised the price. In May of 2012, following the Argyle fire, we decided to host a tasting as a fundraiser. When we would host fundraisers we gave half of the proceeds to our chosen charity and during many of these charity pours we were hosting well over 100 people… What’s it going to be like tomorrow? Beats me. It’s $25.00 and I’m just trying to have a good time and not to lose money…

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
