Wine News
If it’s not one thing it’s another… Last week I wrote about the problem in getting items in and this week we’ve been notified of price increases. I’m sure over the next month or so the market will stabilize but for the mean time we’re still doing the best we can to bring in your old and possibly some new favorites.
Dan’s Wine Feature
A few years back I came across this week’s feature in my collection and it seemed like just the time to try it out and I was very happy that I did. Merryvale Vineyards are great producers of big Cabernets and the 2016 Napa Valley is no exception. Comprised of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 6% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc makes this a Bordeaux styled red but with just enough Cabernet to still qualify as such. Tasting notes describe this vintage “2016 was a great year for classic wine lovers with a very even growing season and a fairly late harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon ripened slowly and gave us wines with soft tannins, delicate flavors and great balance. These wines will continue to develop and show a lot of complexity and secondary flavors as they age. The wine opens with abundant dark fruit on the nose such as plum, blackberry and cherries, with a touch of leather and graphite. On the mouth it starts with lively acidity that brings a freshness to the wine, then it evolves on soft tannins and a very velvety texture—already showing great! There is a lot of tension and drinkability with this wine at release so it can be enjoyed immediately. This wine sets the standard for high quality Napa Cabernets and will age beautifully for the next 15 years”. Sure it may not become a daily drinker at $69.99 a bottle but it’s a very worthy competitor in that mid to high priced 90+ wines. Stop in and pick one up for your cellar or dinner table you’ll find out just how happy I was when opening my bottle.
Dan’s Pick
Reserve del Puech Vielles Vignes 2019 Cotes du Rhone is my pick for this week. This is an honest to goodness, cheap and cheerful barbecue red! This Grenache, Syrah and Carignan Red Blend goes for an incredible price of $10.99 and is it good you ask?? You bet, smooth and flavorful and suited for everything coming off the grill from ribs and burgers to a hearty steak. These are the staples that are just great wines to have in stock, non guilty Wednesday night bottles, wines to share with family members that may be undeserving of those expensive bottles that you’ve been holding onto or that second or third bottle of the evening. You want to talk multi-purpose…we’ve got it!
Food News
Beef and fish prices are up and while not affecting us yet I’m sure we’re all about to take a hit. The good news is our specialty cuts, Waygu and Dry Aged seem stable and may be able to ride this out. Either way we’ll still have some great options for you each and every week. Make sure to keep an eye out on what’s new…
Food Feature of the Week
What??? CAB Tomahawk Ribeyes for $35.00! OK, OK they’re frozen but shop a bit earlier and let these beautiful steaks thaw out. These are great looking cuts that weigh out between 24/28ozs. They’re the perfect size to share or even try taking one on for yourself. While these won’t always be available we have a few in the store today and I’m already trying to secure a few more for next week.

Final Thought
Why it seems like only yesterday…the hell it does! The last 14 months+ seems like 14 years. Did we do it right, I don’t know. Were the decisions we made the correct ones, I don’t know. However, my philosophy has always been that you make the best decision you can with all the information that you can possibly gather and rest on the fact that this was your decision and move forward. That’s just what we’re doing starting this Saturday. With the help of many, which includes many of you) we’ve made it to the other side and now we’d like to share that other side with you…We hope to see some old friends soon and look forward to making some new ones along the way.
Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
