Welcome to 2023!

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

The year is already off to a good start with the warm weather we had… I hope it’s a sign of good things to come.

Hours of Operation

Monday – Saturday

10am to 6pm

Calendar 🗓

Jan 14 (Sat) - It’s Pappa al Pomodoro all day long. Not interested in a rich tomato peasant soup? Fine, we’ll also be serving Mortadella sandwiches. It just seems like the thing to do on a cold Saturday in January. On top of that, if you’re interested in going to Italy any time soon, Gianni will also be in the back room from 11:00 to 1:00 (please note this time has changed) answering questions and sharing information about 2023 trips.

Jan 21 (Sat) - Oyster-O-Rama is back! That’s right, but this time we’re bringing in a few more… maybe like 500 more! On the half shell, New Orleans style, or Rockefeller. Have them your way, Saturday all day! If you know you will be stopping in, give us a call to reserve how many oysters you'd like.

Store News 🏬

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Well, we did. We want to make a few fun changes around here this year, so keep your eyes peeled.

Wine News🍷

Good news and bad news for our Australia fans. Our Molly Dooker selection took a bit of a hit this past week, so we are almost out of those wines. On the bright side, we got in several new Australian wines for you to try out. Come on in, test them out, and let us know what you think. Maybe we have a few new keepers. And don’t worry — Molly Dooker will be back.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️

My feature for this week is Schild Estate’s Prämie 2017 Shiraz from Barossa Valley, Australia. You may know that I have a soft spot for Australian wines, and this one is no exception. Schild Estates is the oldest family-owned winery in the Barossa Valley, and its vineyards are home to some of the oldest vines in the world, a whopping 170 years old. This wine comes from a single vineyard and was rated 95 points. “The 2017 Schild Estate Prämie Shiraz is aromatically complex and features layered aromas of dark plums, blueberries and chocolate before more earthy, mineral hints of dusty red earth and boot polish peak from behind. The palate is marked by a controlled creamy mouthfeel with the same primary dark fruit and chocolate notes evident before a fine tannin frame works around the edges and provides just enough framing to allow the fruit a targeted line of travel through the palate. Structural, mineral and bright.” We only have a few bottles of this one, and at $39.99, it won’t last long, so stop on down and give it a try sooner rather than later.

Dan’s Pick 🥂

This week’s pick is the Lapis Luna 2020 Red Blend out of Lodi, California. We’ve had Lapis Luna before, but the Red Blend is new to us. We tasted it this week and thought it was great value at just $14.99. This wine is 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 25% Malbec, and 5% Barbera, and you can definitely pick out each of those grapes (except maybe the Barbera). The winemaker says this about it: “Fully ranged from ripe, red fruits to dark and brooding notes. Layers and layers of crushed blackberries underlined with spice. Juicy and round with lush, supportive tannins, the finish lingers long into a promising future.” If you’re a fan of rich, full-bodied wines at a bargain price, this one is for you.

Food News 🐄

Nothing much new in the world of food. Prices on beef have been high, so unfortunately we don’t have any fresh steaks this week. But we always have our frozen Beef Tenderloins and some beautiful fresh salmon and Acadian Pearl Oysters, just in today. For those of you who say you don’t like salmon… you haven’t tried this salmon.

Food Feature 🐟

You know what warm weather means: BURGERS. Chelsea told me she woke up on Tuesday and all she wanted was a burger, so her wish is my command. We got back in Certified Angus Beef Burgers, a 4-pack for $12.99. We love these burgers and haven’t had them in a while, so I’m happy to have them back in for you. The weather might be getting cold again, but burgers will always warm you up.

Final Thoughts 💬

I’m in sunny Mexico this week taking a break after the hectic holiday season. The holidays are always a lot of work for us, but it’s a good kind of hectic. Whether a gift, a meal, or simply a bottle for your table, I’m grateful for all of you who continue to choose us year after year. I hope you had a safe and happy holiday, and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year. But first… margaritas.

Cheers — or should I say salud — from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
