Store News 🏬

What news??? We're just recovering down here. It was a busy holiday season, and as much as we enjoy it, it's exhausting. This is the week we take to regroup, restock, and ponder all kinds of ideas to share with you in 2024.

Wine Feature

This week's feature is an old favorite that we have back in the store this week: Caymus-Suisun 2020 Grand Durif. Caymus-Suisun is part of the Caymus portfolio, from Chuck Wagner's son Joseph Wagner. While Caymus itself is in Napa Valley, Caymus-Suisun is right next door in where else but Suisun Valley. The grape is Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, one of the first grapes planted in California, but this is not the Petite Sirah you're used to. "This wine showcases a deep, dark purple color that immediately catches the eye, while the aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and cassis waft from the glass, hinting at the richness of the wine to come. On the palate, the wine bursts with flavors of dark fruit and warm baking spices, with subtle hints of vanilla and toasted oak adding a touch of complexity. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, balancing the rich fruit flavors and adding structure to the wine's long, elegant finish." This wine got a hefty 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, so if you like Caymus, Quilt, etc., or just want something to warm you up on these winter evenings, come grab one --- at $49.99, you won't be disappointed.

Wine Pick 🥂

The feature this week is from Nola Grace Cellars. You may remember I featured a couple of their wines not too long ago, but this time I'm picking their Carbonated Pinot Grigio. Carbonated wine, you say??? You bet. It's similar to a sparkling wine but not quite as intense. As we roll out of New Year's, I thought it best we transition slowly out of the sparkling mindset, and this is the bottle to do just that. The winemaker says, "The honeysuckle, pear, honeydew and tropical fruit aromas and melon, pear and elderflower flavors are elevated by the effervescence and carry through to a lingering finish." This unique bottle priced at $16.99 is cheap and cheerful and a new way to drink one of your favorite wines.

Food News 🦃

Nothing much new this week, just trying to stock up on some winter items that are warm and hearty this time of year, especially the pastas. We will be keeping a stead supply of the Drake's Veal Ravioli and Butternut Squash Ravioli, and we'll be bringing back in some of the Fresh/Frozen Bacchini pastas. And apparently today is National Spaghetti Day, so I recommend stopping in and trying our Maurizio Spaghetti Chitarra if you've never had it. It's some of the best spaghetti you'll find this side of the Atlantic, and we've even got the sauce to go with it. A little taste of bright and sunny Italy here in chilly, gray Northwest Ohio.

Oyster News 🦪

We've still got those delicious Raspberry Points from PEI, and this week we also brought in Katama Bay Oysters from Martha's Vineyard. It's definitely cold enough this time of year to bring in some oysters from waters farther south, so I like to take advantage of it. Katama Bay Oysters "are as pristine as the Vineyard" with deep cups and an unforgettable brine flavored by the salinity of the deep ocean they're raised in. Come on down and give them a try.

Final Thoughts 💬

It's hard to believe another holiday season is over and another year is here. Thank you to all of you who shopped and dined with us over the past several weeks. You are the reason we do what we do, and and we obviously couldn't do it without you. I hope 2024 is off to a good start, and whatever changes and challenges come, may it be one of the best years yet.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
