Wine News
Our yearly orders of Beaujolais Nouveau speak clearly to the transportation and availability of all wine. There were 9 different labels we ordered for this year. If we’re lucky we’ll have 4 or 5 here next Thursday. It’s not a question of them being produced, it’s a question of could they guarantee delivery on or before Thursday the 18th. Sure there’s disruption in the market but the good news is prices for the most part are remaining steady. OND (October, November & December) usually means a steady price point. Will prices go up, you bet but hopefully not for a couple of months. In the meantime we keep looking for wines that can guarantee availability and consistent pricing, so as always stop in and see what we’ve got for you we’d be happy to see you.
Dan’s Feature
In honor of Veterans Day and its beginning this week’s feature will be a great French label, Chateau Fleur Cardinale 2018 Saint Emilion Grand Cru. Vintners notes describe this wine as follows: “After a tough 2017, the 2018 Fleur Cardinale returns to a more normal blend this year and has produced a very beautiful wine. This is, as ever with this cooler terroir over to the west of St-Emilion, a little bigger than some, with well defined tannins and a fairly masculine feel. Give it time in the glass and the rich, ripe brambly fruits come spilling over, full of juice and promise. The tannins are equally full of life and overall this is extremely appealing. It has settled in already at this early stage, and will age well”. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and just 4% Cabernet is a great bottle for any occasion and at $84.99 it would be a very welcome addition to any upcoming holiday gathering or to cellar for a future occasion. Bordeaux is without doubt one of the crown jewels of French wine and this Grand Cru explains so well why it is.
Dan’s Pick
Knowing that my grandfather fought in the second battle of the Marne and now knowing that the Marne River Valley is where Champagne originated, it’s only proper that I choose a small grower produced Champagne for this week. The Mousse’ Family has been growing in the Marne Valley since the 1750s. Needless to say, they’ve been through some exceptional historic events, but yet they still exist to this day and, in fact, produce one of our favorite Champagnes. Unlike so many others, this Pinot Meunier concentrated Champagne is rounded out with a bit of Pinot Noir and is absolutely delicious! I’m pretty sure that after 270 years, the Mousse’ family figured out what grows best on this hallowed ground and speaking from experience how to make an exceptional bottle of Champagne for $54.99.
Food News

Food Feature of the Week
This week’s food feature is Detroit style square pizza. Buddy’s Pizza is an independent pizza restaurant chain based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1946, Buddy’s created their now famous pizza and just recently began a small distribution network which we are now a part of. Buddys has been called one of the five best pizzerias in the United States by the Food Network and we’re happy to be able to share them with you.

Final Thought
The 11th day, of the 11th month, at the 11th hour…there’s no one left to remember the significance of these numbers. 103 years ago today, the War to end all Wars (WWI) officially concluded. As told by my Grandfather, French wine flowed freely and celebrations commenced unabated.Today, while French wine still flows freely, the war to end all wars was obviously and unfortunately not at hand. Today is not so much a celebration, as it is a day of reverence and remembrance. And, if you choose as I do, to enjoy a little French wine on this auspicious day… all the better.
Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant
