News 🗞
No events this weekend as we are doubled up next weekend with the Art Walk and Car Tunes, so we're taking a little breather. This week's excitement is that we finally got a case of Wine Spectator's #1 wine from last year, Don Melchor 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from... nope, not California... Puente Alto, Chile. A near-perfect expression of what Chile can produce, Don Melchor has been perfecting this wine for 30 years, and now it's reached the pinnacle. Expressive, intense, complex are just some of the adjective used to describe this wine, but Wine Spectator can do that better than me. If you don't know, the week the Top Ten list is revealed every year just might be the most exciting week of the year. I'm on my computer, refreshing my browser each day as new selections are announced, then immediately on the phone with my distributors to see if I can bring them in for you. More often than not, we don't have access to them, as was the case with this Don Melchor. Well, no more! It is a pricier bottle at $164.99, as is to be expected, but I have seen a lot worse. We only have six of them, so if you want to see what the best wine in the world tastes like, give us a call or stop in soon.
Wine Feature ⭐️
We have a new California Cab in the house, Martis 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. As far as I can tell, Martis only makes this one wine, so you'd better hope it's good. Winemaker Jenn Barak has a true love for Sonoma, which is actually where Cabernet Sauvignon vines were first planted in Northern California, and she created Martis "to celebrate Sonoma’s pioneering history, and to show a love for Cabernet Sauvignon from the other side of the Mayacamas, where the roots run deeper." From the northern reaches of Alexander Valley with iron-rich soils, high temperatures, and marine fog, conditions for Cabernet are just about perfect at Martis. Consisting of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petite Sirah and Malbec, this $29.99 bottle is full and rich with a nice balance of fruit, oak, and a touch of minerality. "On the nose, bold aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark cherry intertwine with hints of mocha, vanilla, and toasted oak. The palate is rich and full-bodied, showcasing velvety tannins that seamlessly balance the wine’s depth and complexity. Notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and baking spice linger on the finish... This wine is ready to impress now but also has great aging potential for those patient enough to cellar it. Perfect for pairing with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or a decadent dark chocolate dessert."

Wine Pick 🥂
Muralhas de Monção 2024 Vinho Verde is the pick this week. If you've had any of the Vinho Verdes we usually carry, you know that they are bright and citrusy white blends from Portugal that almost always have a touch of sweetness and effervescence. Well, this one is a little different in that the sweetness and effervescence are significantly toned down. Still a fresh, vibrant wine, this bottle is 70% Alvarinho and 30% Trajadura with notes of apple, mint, and lime with the token acidity and minerality that you expect from a Vinho Verde, plus a floral note that starts popping out when the temperature warms up. The 2023 vintage of this wine was also in the Top 100 Wines a couple of years ago, so we took our chance and grabbed a case of this while we could. Employee-tasted and approved, only $9.99.

Oysters 🦪
Fiddler's Cove are the new oysters this week. From Megansett Harbor in Massachussets, these are medium to medium-large in size with high intensity brine and a mineral finish. These will be good no matter how you have them.

Final Thoughts 💬
I hope you've been enjoying the Italian delicacies I had shipped over... salts, oils, truffle, and more. The final shipment of goods should be arriving soon, and I'll give you one guess as to what it is... actually, I don't think you could get it with ten guesses. We're not sure when exactly it will arrive, but it shipped on Tuesday, stay tuned for the reveal. You'll be surprised.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
