Wine News 📰
Thank God it’s almost May because we have over 25 Rosés on the shelf down here, and we’re running out of room... no, we HAVE run out of room. Somehow we’ll make them fit. Some may say that this is excessive, and I understand that; however, these wines are only released once a year, and we’re very choosy when it comes to them. Many of these wines will last through the summer and into the fall, and the idea of missing out on our favorites is something that we just don’t like. The common myth that Rosés all taste the same is not something we buy into. Each of these bottles come from different growing regions, are comprised of different varietals, and are produced in different manners, making them not only unique but also delicious! No, we’re not running out soon, but if you or someone you know loves Rosé, the pickings are pretty good right now.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️
Mollydooker wines have always had a place in our racks, and they have been a bit difficult to procure in the past few years. Weather and fires just like we’ve seen in Oregon and Washington have pretty much wiped out certain vintages, so when we see one of them reappear, we get excited. This week’s feature is Mollydooker 2021 Blue Eyed Boy. This new vintage is, "black crimson in color, this wine leaps from the glass with powerful aromatics of blueberries, fresh plum, licorice and nuances of chocolate biscuit. The seamless texture is laced with fresh berry fruit, coffee, vanilla cream and warm spice, giving us a full-bodied Shiraz with an endless depth of flavor and great length." Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz is an exceptional wine that truly showcases the quality and character of Australian Shiraz, and it is a great choice for special occasions, celebrations, or simply enjoying with a delicious meal. While maybe not every meal seeing how it’s now priced at $69.99, it’s still worth it. Maybe you’re a blue-eyed boy that can pick this up for Mother's Day or maybe as a gift to your blue-eyed dad for Father's Day. No matter what day you choose, it will definitely be a special day when you open it up.
Dan’s Pick 🥂
Chenin Blanc is a prolific varietal of which we carry a wide variety from many different regions. However, my pick for this week comes from one of the best growing regions for this grape: South Africa. Unorthodox 2021 Chenin Blanc comes to us from the Western Cape. This father and son team, Michael and Simon Back, operate one of the oldest and most reputed wineries in the Simonsberg area. While the estate's history dates back to 1916 when it became the first winery in South Africa to open a public tasting room, Backsberg has recently become internationally acclaimed for its efforts to make environmentally sustainable wines. Tasting notes describe this as, "a light straw colored wine with tropical pineapple, hard candy, passion fruit flavors on the nose. Crisp acidity, smooth tasting and well balanced." We’ve carried other Chenin Blancs from South Africa; this one, however, rises above the others. It is extremely well-made and ready for your table. Pair this with chicken or fish, and you’ll understand why we like this wine so much, and at $22.99 a bottle, it won’t break the bank. Stop in for that fish or chicken, and we’ll have a bottle of this great little wine available to round out your table.
Food News 🐟
Lots of new items in, be it crackers, fish, or…chicken! I’m featuring the chicken this week, but halibut is also in and affordable! This beautiful wild-caught Canadian fish prices out at $24.99/lb and is as beautiful as a fillet can be. Whereas we’ve had Halibut many times, this is a special price via a supplier that we brought in to share with you. If you like Halibut, stop in because these prices are great! The coolers and freezers are full, so stop in and pick up something to lay on the grill or pop in the oven. We’ve got something for everyone!
Food Feature 🐓
Michigan Family Farms chicken is where I’m leaning this week. This week is the first week this spectacular chicken is available. This is Amish-raised, non GMO, antibiotic-free, free range chickens. In other words, fresh chicken from a farmer that raises them right. This week, we have boneless skin-on thighs and wings, both of which are in 2+ pound packages (fresh not frozen). The thighs are $14.99 per package, and the wings are $13.99. Sure, you can find less expensive chicken, but nothing that tastes this good and is treated right. This is never going to be a big ticket item down here, but you know, every once in a while, a great piece of great chicken off the grill sounds delicious!
Oyster News 🦪
Standish Shore is what’s in house this week. Chelsea has declared that they’re her new favorite, so we brought a couple hundred in for your enjoyment. They’re the perfect size for a cocktail or baking, and we’re able to do them any way you want them. Deep cupped, plump, crisp oysters from Duxbury Bay in Massachusetts will please pretty much everyone, no matter how we bring them to your table.

Final Thoughts 💬
Don’t get me wrong, I love Spring, but I despise allergies… very hard to breath, very hard to taste wine... and believe me, I tried. Maybe that’s the reason for so few new wines this week aside from our pre-ordered rosés. Unfortunately, I don’t have anything down here that can cure allergies, but I do have plenty of items available to help get you through it.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
